Sitting in the Outpost for changeover day trying to settle the marbles rolling around the head to get a report out today. Arrived Thursday and was fortunate enough to be assigned the well known forum member who owned the popemobile as our guide. We told Butcher to put the ground fish rods away we wanted to troll only. The trip was going to be extra sporty with 35-50 km northwest predicted for the trip and the first run out to Tian went as predicted. We could only tac with the drift and proceeded hook up with quality fish every tac. Chose not to box any on the first day as the fishing was excellent. Next day requested a pack lunch as we didn’t want to run in and out in the 30-50 NW an extra time. We picked off some nooks, a couple of lings and our lottery small turkey on the troll. In honour of the commercial opening Butcher landed everything with a gaff only. Called it an early day at 2 and ran back to the lodge very satisfied. Last full day we requested a different day. We were not focused on a tub out and wanted to explore the area and there was an opening in the morning to run out to Hippa. We started at Selveson and tacked down the western reef and saw 3 humpbacks and the commercial fleet. We hooked and released some quality fish. As we were making the turn to fish the southern reef we hooked into something heavy. After a 20 minute stand off we managed to get it boatside and saw a silhouette of something 4 feet long and it was not brown. Never seen someone run for the net so fast thinking we were about to measure and release a fish of lifetime. Our emotion fell but picked up again so fast when we got a good look at it. It was a salmon shark hooked perfectly in the corner of his mouth. Butcher got his lemon lime spoon back with a text book gaff release and we took a moment to reflect on what just happened. Buzzed by the SS Clarkson wreckage as we pulled into Indie Cove for lunch. Gorgeous and speechless. Waited for a mermaid to emerge from the green blue water but it wasn’t to be. We put a couple of tacs at Skelu bay and decided to start the sporty run back to the lodge through Hippa Passage. Once we cleared the inside waters we put the 22 Boston Whaler Guardian through its paces worthy of a marketing commercial. I actually wept from joy on that run back to the lodge. No words and pictures do it justice. It has to be experienced in person and all I can state is that it’s a special place. Thanks
@advTHXance for the trip of a lifetime!
