2021 Ucluelet Reports

Fished Wya after a loop at little beach this am. Looks good on the screen but not many fish in there. Decent quality fish with lots of entertainment value. I only had a 2 pack on board so it was good enough to fill the tags with some patience. Little spoons. Had it to ourselves after a slow start sent the other couple guide boats up to portland. Portland has been good volume for a couple days. Bank has seen most of the effort since opening.
Very nice!

Are those yellow eye rockfish?

Fished flo for a few hours this morning without a bite. Lots of bait on the sounder though. Moved to Wya, lost a couple and brought home a nice sized spring. We were fishing coho killers, but the spring was full of squid.

Fished last weekend on Big Bank - Rat Nose for two days after retention of chinook has opened. Good fishing.
Day1: limited out on chinook for our group in 1.5 hours, got 4 halibut and 2 lings by bottom jigging. Day2: lots of action, but 90% of them shakers. Long day. Got a few descent size chinook. Fished at 150-170 ft, white hoochies and anchovies were productive.

Monday was at Outside South Bank to Turtle head. Nothing but a few shakers. Tried Alley Rock and Great Bear and got into a Coho. Went to Big Bank for first time Tuesday. Me and 3 family friends. Almost limited out on Halibut, Chinook, Hachery Coho. Needed 1 more of each. There was a 2 hr period when it was non stop Coho. We couldn't get the down riggers past 60 ft before a Coho would pop the clip.

Pic of lure we used at about 150ft for Chinook. Coho were any where from the surface to 120 ft. Drifted for Hali with blinking squid with salmon belly.

Fished the Big Bank Monday and Tuesday. Weather was glorious with calm seas. Got our possession limit for 3 persons of under 80 cm Chinooks, hatchery Cohos, and Halibut under 90 cm. Only exception was a 25 lber from the Little Beach tack on our 2nd day on the way in to upgrade one 11 lb bleeder. Had to weed thru a ton of 5-10 lb Chinooks and wild Cohos as well as a hand full of over 80 cm Chinooks. Had best success on cuttlefish hootchies in glow green and UV as well as the brown turd. Depths were all over the place with several around 90-100 feet as well as deeper, like 150-170 ft.

Took some friends and their 2 kids (10 and 14) out yesterday for a couple hours at slack high. Did a loop past the light house and little beach. Got the kids into 7 fish but only 2 were small keeper Chinook. Stopped to jig on the North West side of George Fraser and picked up some nice size Black Rockfish. Jigging for rock fish seems to always get the young ones happy with the non-stop action. Everyone had a great time and the best fish sticks for dinner.

Got another couple friends coming in today. Probably take them over to the Bamfield side of the sound to see if we can get into some bigger fish.
It's only been a week as "acting fishing guide" for different groups of my friends. It's a lot of work. Hats off to all you Professional Guides that do this every day.

Went out today and trolled from Cree to Meares Bluff to try and avoid the wind. We got our limits on smaller Chinook (6 to 8 lbs) within a couple of hours. Lots of shakers out there an no coho.

Fished flo for a few hours this afternoon. Took a pounding on the run out. Got into a few smaller springs. Stopped by little beach on the way back in for a few turns, no luck. Will try cree tomorrow.

Went off big bank on Friday and Saturday. Limited out on hali. Did well on coho and spring at 135 feet on green turd hootchy. Picked up a few more springs even deeper at 190’. Springs had big herring in their stomaches.
