2013 Bamfield Tuna Shootout recaps and pics

Great report John, hope you had fun and didn't hurt to much yesterday (I did..).

The Hardy Boy's. Nothing weird about these guys. It was great meeting you Wade and crew!

You didn't walk in on them hanging out in the dark, watching bridesmaids and sipping wine! Haha but a great bunch of guys, we are pumped to have won Wades donated prize of a few nights at BearCove. The Hardy area looks awesome.

Kicking myself in the butt. Hate to miss out on a good time, and now to have your own beer.... I'm in next year! Good job to all the admin, looks like a lot of work with a huge payoff!

Looks like a ton of fun. I'd love to make it to the one next year but unless it gets moved to 1 week earlier, I may have to miss it again due to teaching commitments. One of these days though, I'll find a way to wander up there for this.

Sounds like a great success and loads of fun! Congrats to the winners but as well to all participants. And kudos to the organizers! I know how much work it is to organize and run events like this! I would love to check out this exciting fishery but I am afraid I am not seaworthy enough for such offshore conditions. I told some friends from Germany about this and they were literally shocked that on top of salmon, halibut, steelhead and sturgeon we can also enjoy a tuna fishery here in BC! They honestly think we live in fishing heaven! And we DO - let's make sure it stays like this! Keep up the great work guys! Cheers!

What an awesome adventure...first off thanks to OBH for opening up the Nish Inn for a week of food, bevies and laughs.
The BCTOUGH boys did a stellar job of organizing this event from the opening captains meeting with QCOVE putting on an excellent seminar on the Friday night to having the Coast Gaurd involved as to what they thought was doable.
Thanks to the Captain Kid crew for some good times and laughs (Pakistani Trucker) as well.
I ended up fishing with Andrew (Harper44) on the Reef Raider and had an awesome time...what a sweet ride, thanks buddy...I am still coming down from the week. I also was part of the Rodzilla crew and had plenty of laughs and killed some beauty fish with the guys...NICE BOAT those Pursuits are for sure.

One of the best parts of this fishery is the camraderie between boats and crews...it is about safety, finding fish and getting home safe and sound. Fishing out to 45 to 70 miles off shore is not for the faint of heart and co-operation amongst the boats is paramount for success and safety.

Mills landing were once again working from before we left in the morning until many of us had gone to eat, drink, and recharge...thanks to Jerry and Diane for making sure our fish was finished off properly.

Met some outstanding people over the last week and got to know some others even better than I did before, popped my cherry on Albacore and went farther offshore than I ever have. Had some stellar feasts of sushi, sashimi, and deer tenderloins (Bobber yer the man). Drank some great beers (Longwood Brewery) and some cheap wine and had a time I won't soon forget....I will be back for sure.

Once again,
an epic event by the Bamfield Boys to line up such a great tournament with awesome sponsors, loads of prizes and just great organization...

To those that missed out...you know who you are...don't miss the next or you won't make it at all...this will be the BC Fishing Tournament to be at and it will sell out!

Yes I would like to say a BIG thanks to Jeff , Jon,Kelly and the rest of everyone that participated in this event from us at Mills Landing. It was great to meet some many good people. It will be great to be doing this again next year.

Looks like a blast guys. If all goes to plan may trailer down the 30' or 28' (has outriggers) Pursuit down next year for this! Definitely have to scratch it off the bucket list and I know my bud and our other guide Lane is 100% down too! :D

What can I say; it was a blast and and experience! I want to put a big thank you out too Craig and Willy for inviting us on there 31 Bertram; awesome offshore boat for the sporty seas we all had to fish; and I think we all have to agree that they were sporty when we actually could get out. We had a crew of Virgins that all got popped and the seminar set everything in motion for this; Big shout out to Q-Cove for the seminar and Ken especially!

Craig and Willy; Virgins no more

Also a big thanks to Sculpin and Firelight for getting myself and my crew into this fishery; and talking us into going into the shootout; it was an unbelievable time even when we tried doing the run on Friday and got our azzes handed to us by mother nature; and to Tuna Don and Slivo for talking us out of going any further in the most messed up seas I have ever been in; but it gave us time to go and do some bottom fishing and get some fish for Dinner!

Y caught this bucket head on a kelpling for bait.

Looks like everyone had a great time. Great pictures and descriptions makes for excellent reading.

John, I love the pic of your bleed barrel with tails sticking out. Notice how hammered the tails are, some missing 50% or more of their tail.......those are all travelers and this late in the season they are so schooled up they beat the **** out of each other during feeding frenzies. Earlier in the season the tails are not like that at all.

Glad your new opti came already trained to sniff out the longfins. Nice job John, and bailing on Friday was a wise decision. Seas that big and forecast was building. There will be another day. Hope you saved your belly meat for them flatties.

Finally back to reality here (unfortunately). This event was HANDS DOWN the highlight of the season! Kelly, John, Osama and all the other volunteers did an amazing job and put on a world class event. The sponsorship turnout for a first year event was like nothing I've ever seen so that just shows what good work the BC Tough boys were doing all year in prep!

Big thanks to Terry (tykkyt e blue) and Guy (Get bent) for crewing with me aboard the Reef Raider. And a big shout out to Jody (Trophy Hunter) for getting us on the fish on Day 1. We couldn't have boated the "pound for pound most valuable fish of the derby" without your intel. Good times had by all.

It was good meeting everyone there and fishing with a lot of new faces and names.

Here's a quick shot of Crabby and the BC Tough boys from Thursday

No Octuna for this guy as the schedule is jam packed so the Reef Raider is back in the barn.

Only like 355 days til next shootout!

Cheers

great shots by everyone! I wish I was able to spend more time in bamfield during the shootout, I am currently working on the BAD HABIT trip report and hopefully have time to get it up towards the end of the week. I know the BAD HABIT crew can't wait untill shootout 2014!!! Great job pulling this event off Kelly and the BC tough boys.

Next year it might be a good idea to have a tuna cleaning contest. A prize for the fastest that must meet a minimum recovery %. A prize for the best recovery %. Deductions for gashes/gaping and ruminants of blood lines. Something to do on a blow day. Just an idea.

And people who throw bellies out are made to walk the plank!

There were a lot of boats that entered and I'm assuming took pictures. Is there anyone else with some more pictures to share? :).

I'm having withdrawals already lol :p.
