2012 Vancouver, Howe sound and Sunshine coast reports thread

Hey Canso,

I was the guy at the co-op on the way home, nice job, I will keep my eyes out for you and see you out there next time.

No luck for us at the T-10, started at first light, beauty day, not much else going on around us either.

Getbent
Nice meeting you, the big guy that was with me was pretty excited about his 30lber, he's a river guy, but its been easy to convince him otherwise this past month. keep in touch it always nice having other boats to help search out fish.

Way to go Canso! Nice work. Photos? What were you using? How shallow we're you fishing?

Tim
white Rock

everything on chovies, 45' and 57' on the riggers, water depth was 60-80' most of the time, in tight to the mouth, just off the green can.

heading out tomorrow off west van. today was super slow. any advice?

Fished hard from 7 AM to 5 PM. Only had one nice one on at the bell buoy but lost it to stupidity. Saw a low 20's taken at the pink palace and saw one of the beach guys hook in to a real nice coho. But that was it amoungst what was more than 100 boats! This is my first year with a boat so could someone please say this season, so far, has been exceptionally bad?

I thought it was pretty decent, this has been by far my best year for springs anyway, the big whites should start showing around the cap anytime now
be patient and your day will come

Your right about the depth we hooked two fish and managed to land one about 8-10 lbs. We were a little farther left in about 80 ft of water. Two fish at 7am. Nothing else. First fish was 10 minutes in to our troll.Trying again today.

I am in Steveston ,have a 26' Skipjack and get out to Sand Hd and area a bit. Interested in going out Wed/Thur this week? Mike

First post

Been following you bunch for a while and definetly appreciate all of the good info on the forum. I was out sat am at first light and was working for coho all am at the cap. Ten to 12 hit a good fish off amblside, was on my own except the 3 and 5 year olds who proved to be really hand to get the other rod an Riggers out of the way! Seal lurcking just behind me and I was getting pushed onto the beach! Few minutes later and after several great runs back to the depths I netted a 26# red chinook! Cannon balls were bouncing in the mud at around 65, chovie in a purple and glow teaser with a 6' leader to purple glow flasher. Great fish an the biggest I've caught here locally! I was wondering where this fishay have been destined as I thought cap springs were white? Or this the beginning of the cap run. We had a 18# red a few days earlier near fisheries...

Still trying to decide that my self, have not hit many large springs this season. Can't figure out if it is an off season or my new to me boat from last season just isn't as fishy as the old boat. Last season wasn't the best big fish year for me also. That being said I have had a killer season on sockeye where quads were not unusual and this season has seen the odd triple on coho. I have had some good days over at thrasher for springs but not like 2 years ago. Did get some redemption today and landed a beauty 23 pound red spring right off the cap. Was doing a turn and the wife's bottom rod is limp up in the air from the corner of my eye just as she yells fish. I grab the rod pull back and reel like crazy , thats when I feel that so far elusive heavy weighted head shake and run. I pass off to the wife and gain control of the boat now drifting towards traffic from the current. The wife wasted no time as there was a seal lurking and in no time a nice slab was finally on board the solowey. Fish hit at 96 feet on chart truss teaser and chovy which I laughed at as the chovy looked a little suspect early at gear check . I had stressed changing it out but she wanted to run it, good call.

Fishing Vancouver Harbour - Sunday Sept. 9th

A quick report...

Was out fishing with Peahead on Sunday. Fished Vancouver Harbour.

Got the lines in about 8:30, picked up three of undersize Chinook Jacks, kept 2 in the teens, got sealed on one that looked in the mid teens, and lost another nice one at the net just as we pulled lines to head home about 3 PM when the hook caught on the net an prevented the fish from being scooped up.

More photos later...

My brother and a few of his buddies fished Ambelside and the Bell Buoy yesterday, not even a sniff.

Not surprising. In spite of how well we did, I would not say it was great fishing yesterday. It was slow. We did not see a lot of fish boated by other boats and half of those we did see were small fish that were released.

It was as much luck as anything. You just had to keep moving around until you found a fish. It seems to me that it is still a bit early, hopefully things will improve in coming days.

Really enjoyed having you guys out, Sushi. To add .....true that overall there were not alot of fish taken that we saw or heard and absolutely yes we are not seeing the "fall whites" quite as of yet. Bit early. Dave's ( dmurph) fish was biggest I heard, so wondering if it might have been a white?? There was a decent number of Jacks around in the 55cm range but with them being fat and short ( like some of my buddies ;) ) they were great fighters for their size and often feel like you have a legal fish on! Of our 4 bigger fish on, two were chrome and 2 were darker. Our boxed fish were red and marble. The bulk of the harbour fish I have had lately ( counting out to QA) and those seen at my dock (from same area) aren't the "fall whites" yet. As others have mentioned generally Sept 15th - October 15th it turns mostly white! Sushi is not going to be used to it .....fishing late season Chinook in the ocean in October !! By that time most Tahsis fishers have no chinook to target and many put the ocean rods away till next year !!
PS my reaching with the net like that is certainly bad technique - I won't mention that the guy on the rod just wouldn't bring the fish closer to the boat despite the seal lurking closely !! Yeah I iknow, the 7' leader didn't help! :0
