2012 Vancouver, Howe sound and Sunshine coast reports thread

How long do you think the Vancouver area fishery will continue into the fall? Just contemplating whether I should drag my boat over from the Island for some fall fun..

I would think mid October this year. But if they open the cap dam earlier due to rain fall then the fish shoot straight up the river so keep an eye on that.

What about coho destined for the Chilliwach and Chehalis? Can these be targeted? Sorry, but this is my first year with a boat so I am not famailiar with the various fisheries.

In the river after October 4th possibly if they open it. There is a bait ban in place and coho fishing is closed on the fraser right now to protect interior coho stocks.

got this 25lb white spring this morning off pink apt

anchovy teaser head

Any suggestions on best way to rig anchovy teaser head using a 2/0 single hook ? Let the hook trail or through the meat ? I'll be fishing the mouth of the cap on friday and single hook only is the reg.

ya 2 singles is right from the lions gate bridge up to the 14th street pier and across to the lighthouse off stanley park. we have been fishing just off the point by the pink apartments and using a chrome anchovy teaser with a treble on the back. worked really well for us on tuesday. good luck on fri nooky

Nooky,
I usually stick the first hook just in the black latteral line and just inline with the dorsal fin with the second stinger hook just in the fork of the tail
and yes two single pointed only at the cap mouth
Tim

Thanks FB , Lately I need a lot of luck !!
fished in front of the pink appartment and had two really nice screamers , but gave them both the long line release, used a anchovie on one at 75' and the other at 57' in 100' of water, at 3knots. Went down to the cap and got a double hitter and got them both in but to small 47cm appr per fish so they were released. rods were really shallow at 57 and 32 and the water was ripping. Had enough of a perticular bayliner who tried to mount me,
so I Left the gong show and went to sandheads and bell and point grey..... nada !

Oh no a gay Bayliner, thanks for the report I'm going to get out there soon now that I hear the odd fishis around. Maybe Friday as the wind calms. :)

is West Van and Mouth of the Cap the only options now or will there still be some at the Bell, North Arm, T10 Etc?

It sure sounds like a pretty concentrated fishery, especially on weekends.

That's putting it mildly;)

There will still be the fraser springs off T-10 and out towards QA and over to the north arm. I was still catching a few springs out there until the end of September last year.

nice to know there's some options if a person doesn't feel like or tires of being part of the gong show. Fishing during the week is not possible for me and fishing is a getaway from the grind of the work week. Kamakazee fishing just ain't that enjoyable, especially single handed.

The area you describe is correct however to describe it more accurately, almost 100% of the Ambleside/Cap area that fall saltwater trollers drag lines, is not in the large single hook/treble hook closure area. The no treble area ( also no single bigger than 15 mm shank to point as I recall) is inside ( toward North Shore and LG Bridge) a line drawn from the 14th street pier to Prospect point light - If you plot that line on a chartplotter you can see you would have to be in about 2' - 20' of water off the cap in most of the area to be inside that line. The line runs just barely outside the Cap light in approx 30-40' of water and as you get east of the Cap light you start to more easily get into the treble closure however the area east of the Cap light and from there toward the bridge is a total closure area anyway ( I know sometimes its tough to make your turn back to the west without going a tad east of the Cap light a bit but beware, that is a closed area!

Couple/few years ago I inquired with DFO (and got some second hand info from fisheries) and finally managed to get some sort of an explanation about the treble /large hook closure. Apparently the reason behind the treble closure in those shallows, including Sewer Bay, is that it was a reg instilled to cut down on snaggers casting from shore at the Cap using big single hooks or trebles to snag fish. Also that enforcement of that rule was targeted at shore fishers and not boats trolling farther off shore ( Which makes sense since the area of the closure isn't generally fishable by trollers anyway.
