yeah except it was catch and release not bonked in the box and you had to call it in as soon as you had a potential fish on the line,
this was to deter exactly what you're referring to, if ya gotta cheat then you shouldnt be there!

Congrats to the winner and the event sponsors for pulling it all off. Maybe next year we will see something more of a working man's derby because of this.

I was in the derby and some of the other members on this forum are criticizing the event and the entry fees. This is unfair and unwarranted.

It was a well organized and well run derby for it's first year and put together in just a few short weeks. Cheers to Pacific Angler, the West Coast Fishing Club and all the other major sponsors and organizers who put on the event. I'll be in again next year and I have no problem fronting the $1500 "all in entry".

As for those who couldn't afford to shell out the bucks and are then criticizing the derby, then I guess this derby isn't for you.

Please organize your own derby and do all the legwork and brainwork and put on your own to suit your tastes.
We'll all enter your derby too and then criticize it..or not enter then criticize it.

You pick the poker table you want to play on.

If you want to participate in another derby, the North Vancouver Firefighters Derby is on later this month. Entry is afew nominal dollars and you can fish the Cap. Have at it.

FM I know you probably had a hand it the organizing of the derby somehow be it big or small and let me be the first to say thanks for the extra effort to all who did,
to organize something like that in a short period of time and pull it all off I'd say was a definate sucsess story
I couldnt be in this one but I would have if I could, it just wasnt in the cards for me this year but it will be in the future ones to come
250. a day for a shot at big money with 40:1 odds of winning is pretty dam good I'd say

Thanks for all the GREAT FISHING REPORTS LATELY (get over it , its over , it was great and now lets go get the salmon ....)

Fished this west van to the cap this past weekend with mixed results. We were out early each morning and set up off the pink apartment, trolling for coho. The Saturday we hit fish right away at 33' with a big ugly and red flasher and this set up worked for the bite the best until on one of the fish a big seal took it, the fish attached to it and my entire spool of line lol. My wife had a messed back and is a great angler so our production was way down on getting them in the net, but she did part take in a triple we had off ambleside which resulted in one big wild released, one with the hook ripped through the fishes lip on the aggressive hook set and a bigger hatch. All in Saturday was fun fishing, with pretty calm water and a all right bite but there was a savage amount of junk in the water which made for busy gear checking. Sunday was alright with only one fish for us and of course just as we pull up and left to get the traps 4 boats hooked up and a few springs were taken. Monday was dead for us which was a a little sad as there were tons of jumpers and perfect conditions.

We would have liked to enter the derby, but with my wife out with her back and a baby on board it was hard to imagine being productive against all the others. The entry fee was a bit steep for our situation knowing we could be as productive, other wise I think the fee is fine seeing that you could have won so much cash and the second and third place prizes were also great. Would have been a good time at the party after the derby with a delicious dinner. Next year.

Wind, Wind and more Wind, blew me off the water after 4 hours! Fished QA and Bell and nothing but grills(I trolled all the way from the Bell to QA) . Did see some seals so the Black Fish must be staying away , maybe because the fish aren't here yet. Well I get a week off of the 10th of Sept and going to hit the water hard SOMEWHERE for some fish action , but today nothing for me. I did hear that one guy picked one up at the cap and was slow everywhere else.

FYI sir-vivor ,

Resident orcas are salmon eaters and don't bother with seals. Transient orcas hunt and eat seals and have no interest in salmon. Believe it or not the seals and the salmon can tell the difference between resident and transient .

A large double-skirt hootchie (Yamashita, I think). I like the white/UV for coho, trolled fast.

Fished from 9.00am to 6.00pm - not a touch. Started at Bell Buoy and then down to T10. Very rough and difficult to troll. Saw one fish netted at Bell Buoy and heard of one lost, heard same for Cap with a very assertive seal in situ.
