2012 Vancouver, Howe sound and Sunshine coast reports thread

fished from 9:00am - 4:00pm at Red can/mile markers, nothing but chinook smolts. Hell of a nice day but not many fish. Saw three netted all day, probably a few more we didn't see, there was a lot of boats out. Anybody else have reports?

I was out at the Bell and we lost 3.......1 broke off behind the flasher and was a hell of a nice looking fish.

Lost 1 we saw that was maybe high teens and the other hit, ran and spit the hook. Was trying to get my GF a fish and she had some slight mishaps n the rod....her first of the year so I didn't make her swim home. :p

All on green glow head at 60 ish feet. The one that broke off has been haunting me all day.:( :o

Should mention the action we had was mid to late morning and all 3 hits were out west of the Bell.

At the Bell this afternoon for a few hours. Caught and released 2 sockeye, both on chovies of all things. Also lost what felt like a decent chin on the initial run. Chovies in UV heads at 60' + 50', chin came at 60'

we hit west van at first light. Hit one spring 2cm udersize. Lost a coho , then moved to the bell. Nothing there for us . so we tried T10 , nothing again. All in all had a few bites we missed but fishing seemed tough for us. Nice day though and just a beautiful morning going out.

Came out of the tunnell on the way home and had to hammer on the brakes just past the Tswassen,Ladner exit, some moron missed the exit so decided to try and back up down the freeway in the right lane i was in. I could not believe it, no you are not doing that! Yes he was and not just a little ways he was already past the underside of the overpass. unfriggin believable.

I was tossing and turning about where to fish today. The fishing reports have not been good so instead of heading for an unproductive day of endless trolling and frustration we launched at Cresecent Beach and headed over to explore around Saturna. It was a beautiful day and the crossing was perfect. We had a super fun day...probably because I wasn't stressed out about fishing. Do any of you know what I mean? Down rigger cables getting too close to the kicker prop; depths getting too shallow when your riggers are deep; other boats getting in your way; seeing other boats netting fish when you are not; tangled line; losing gear; down riggers up down up down up down; seaweed; trolling in a chop; keeping family members engaged.....salmon fishing is stressful when you are the captain! Do any of you know what I am talking about? Anyway, Saturna Island was fun while exploring for the day. I fished for thirty minutes at the south end and actually got a hit. Good fun and no stress. Happy wife, happy life.

I was out today from 7am till 12pm. We started at the pink palce. Coho were jumping all over but picky about hitting. We hit 2 landed 1....;...my five year old sons FIRST FISH EVER! Proud dad moment.
We headed out to bell//mile market. We hit 2 but lost a jack. Next was a nice sized nook, he fought weird, zigging and zaggin and then the jumping...Seal on!
What a fight, we pulled the gear and chased it down. What a rodeo! We circled it until it tired...and for a brief second, let it go. Nice 16 lb red spring (bbq'd tonight!). Part of the tail was gone , but the flesh was unharmed.
It was slow today but a memory that I'll never forget!

Left the marina in the dark to fish west van flats at first light. Hooked into a very nice coho pretty quick at 17 feet in under 30 feet of water. Had the fish boat side and attempted to net 3 times before it rolled out of the net and swam off. Had a good hit that didn't stick and a few undersize chinook before actually landing a coho. All hits were on a double skirt uv hoochy and green glo flasher. Saw a nice mid twenty spring taken and heard of another twenty before I left for the bell. Bell was dead for me other than a few undersize. Wanted to pick up one of the ones Pippen lost. Can't believe you thought about making your girl swim home for losing a fish Scott . Lol pretty quiet for the number of boats out there

Hahaha........I just added that in my post for the effect ;); you win some and you lose some. :p

Have had more than a few battles with seals and sea lions......2 sea lions off of Kyuquot trying to get at a high 20's spring on the end of my line was a hell of a battle. Just myself and my GF on board and she is screaming in glee saying "THIS IS SOOOO COOL!!!". Meanwhile I am saying......"this isn't cool and I am not losing my gear to these f*cks".

I saw Jason from Pac Angler doing some tight circles out to the northeast of the bell and was pretty sure he was chasing down a seal too.

You are exactly bang on! Kids thought fishing a seal was the best ever! I thought it was a challenge. The guide was hoping to get the gear back :)
I was on Bon Chovy's "iron Marlin" grady. It's a sweet boat. Their guide is amazing. (so is Tonelli on Salty Dawg!) They are 2 of the best around here for sure!

I know exactly how you feel. When you're the solo guy on board at the helm, and keeping your eye on the sonar and rod tips, it can get frustrating. My daughter is happy to steer the boat, but when you have current, waves and wind, it's not easy for her and she tends to over correct. Somedays a simple boat tour is in order. Trying to satisfy our own desires to fish doesn't always fit in with the family's needs or wants.

needlefish,
hope to find some more in the am too

Fished yesterday around the bell buoy, went 2 for 3 against the seals. The seal was 20 ft behind the boat on the the 2nd fish so it became a reeling frenzy to get it aboard. Reminded me of the sockeye fishery in the harbour last year! Both fish were around 10 lbs, 1 white, 1 red at 69' on chovie's.

Boxed 3 on sat. 2 more on Sunday, between sandheads and T10, following the 120' contour line.
Chovy at 60-80'. Lots of seals at the mouth. If you’re getting shakers, speed up.

Has anyone opened the stomic of one of those red springs, if so would really like to know what they found

Sunday boxed 9,12,13,15, 20 lbs chinooks - 4 red 1 marble. 3 had small/firecracker herring and 2 had either empty stomach or so digested you couldn't tell - one red chinook was hatch so will be cool to see where is originated
