2012 TUNA trips

has anyone tried casting poppers? Top water lure with a concave face that 'pops' along the surface of the water.....I've seen videos of poeple using them and it looks like it could be a pretty exciting way to hook up.
I've done it in other countries for YFT, Bonitos, GTs and the like-it sure is fun but the hookup rate is low-using jigs is much more effective.

Saturday is looking good for a tuna trip.
Tofino and ukee sure do not have much in the way of casting gear. I saw a nice chrome buzz bomb @ pioneer boatwork but it was 7$! So....no. Otherwise the folks at pioneer in ukee said they will have a selection of zukers very soon which is great becouse they now have very little. Method has a small selection of Xrap 20's in too.

Very soon i will be joining you guys........can't wait!

Might be a silly question but very new to the game... How late in the year can you run out for these? I assume it is contingent on water conditions - are they gone in Dec?

Also, where is this Chloro site everyone keeps mentioning? I found the SST site but it sounds like you need both for a "full perspective".

Appreciate the help.

Cheers

Yep, I should be on the tuna grounds by 1-2PM on Sat. afternoon. Monitoring 16,68 and 69 - Meant to Be. Plan at about the 3000'-4000' line in roughly the middle of the Juan de Fuca Canyon. The chloro looks better there than farther north according to Terrafin.

The conditions down there have looked awesome for days now:). I really want to get out there and was planning on this Saturday but I have to go to a STUPID WEDDING!!! lol.

I have no tuna experience and know nothing about the gear required, but Cap'n'hooks in Ukee has a bunch of stuff that looks to me like it may be tuna stuff. May be worth a look? Very friendly place that I enjoy visiting when in Ukee.

Ya, My thoughts as well. The chloro charts do look better which means more double and triple headers, yeeehawww!!! if you find fish. there are no garentees. ummm... but i am gona burn alot of gas thats for sure.

Whats the timeline on this type of fishing Shawn? May have the third week of Sept off.

It's always weather dependant and if it's nice enough i will go until the end of September. Maybe give me a call or e-mail me Dennis.

Its such a bonus when you get a 4 star sst chart off terafin just before you go.

That Winter Harbour is less than half the distance to the warm water and the chloro break. Has anyone gone out for them up there yet? mikep?

Good luck to those that went this morning :).

son has gone out to the dellwood hills and the banjo off north island and winter hbr back by tuesday will give report then he says tuna are up to frederick island off charlottes now

skunked. no blue water for 60 miles, no birds, no nothin, nada, zip!

Looks like we have great temp but the cloros are letting us down. We need that water to clear up a little more. I am out in tofino this weekend for some salmon and possibly tuna action weather and terrafin dependent. I am guessing If we head offshore for tuna it will around the louden canyon area....I have some new weapons to try and maybe we can atually get them going on a bait stop this year! Sculpin after looking at the terrafin the winter harbour area looks like a no go. As for anybody else in the tofino area we will proably be going out on the 1st or 2nd weather and terrafin dependent if anybody wants to come along.

Good luck out there mike......I'll be over in Tofino this weekend too but likely just chasing salmon/hali.

Not sure if anyone has any space kicking around through the weekend but I'd definitely be interested in getting out there and more than willing to do my work and pay fair share.

Found a place in my system for a couple of exraps. We have been fishing them tight to the boat just under the propwash with the rods in holder pointed back and down to the water. this way those rods are righ out of the way. Fun stuff.
.

That's exactly how I run them. :)

For casting lures you could probably just run some egg sinkers inside a hoochie of your favorite color. 2oz should fly a long way plus the price is right around dirt cheap.

I agree the chlorophyl situation right now is not good. Guess I was lucky to get em' last week. I never knew how lucky we were to hit the blue water at 25 miles off on years previous. Having said that I have been skunked in perfec gin clear blue water as well but back then I would not go further than 40 miles. I am noticing a correlation with birds and hookups. Birds are good sign. I have never caught tuna with no birds around. The more birds the better.
