2012 TUNA trips

Yeah the more of those little tuna birds the better....the ones that look like little bats. The boys down in washington have great water we just need little bit of that blown our way. Hey birdsnest where were you out last time, some lat and longs would be great. Acually anybody who heads out should post their poistion where they get into the fish, it would be really helpful to get a good picture of where it is all happening.

Sat we fished salmon out of Neah Bay and limited on 6 nice size hatchery coho. Yesterday I ran out for tuna. We went out to the 4000' line straight down the center of the Juan de Fuca Canyon. Highest water temp we found was around 63F. Didn't find clear blue water but the water clarity was pretty good (sky was overcast so it's hard to tell if the water was "blue"). A SSE wind picked up making conditions pretty nasty as the wind waves were mostly perpendicular to the westerly swells. The net effect was I could only easily troll pointy somewhat N. Wound up trolling from about 9:30 to 2PM and made it as far north as the notch between Nitnat Canyon and Juan de Fuca Canyon. Got one hit which we caught - a nice fattie around 18lbs. That was it. The trip back was 3 hours of unpleasantness with the occasional water over the bow. Ran through around 80 gals of fuel at $4.40/gal so that one fish cost about $19.55/lb (or about $40/lb dressed). The loin we had for dinner tasted VERY good - it should for $40/lb of meat! :) Should have fished tuna on Sat and salmon on Sunday.

Looks like we have great temp but the cloros are letting us down. We need that water to clear up a little more. I am out in tofino this weekend for some salmon and possibly tuna action weather and terrafin dependent. I am guessing If we head offshore for tuna it will around the louden canyon area....I have some new weapons to try and maybe we can atually get them going on a bait stop this year! Sculpin after looking at the terrafin the winter harbour area looks like a no go. As for anybody else in the tofino area we will proably be going out on the 1st or 2nd weather and terrafin dependent if anybody wants to come along.

I just tlked to a commie friend and he says the chloro is stinky until about 100 miles out. I'm not going that far, will wait until conditions improve. He got 13,000 lbs in 8 days of fishing with 145 his best day

yeah 100 miles is a bit of a haul, we could proably do 65 or so but what is the point. We are going to be in the 33' persuit ( "bad habit") that is down at the gov dock right now. Sean I think we fished offshore with you and another boat 2 years ago, did pretty good that day. I am bringing a coupe 40# boxes of frozen anchovies over this year to see if we can get a bait stop going on out there. Just waiting ont the water now.....

Yes, i saw that boat at 4th st..... nice looking rig. I'm gonna have the iron ready to go instead of bait. Let's hope that chloro smartens up soon

What do you guys think of the SST and Chloro out at Loudoun? Doesn't look bad around 48.30 and 126.30 for the last few days. Thoughts?

Cheers,

The start of Loudon canyon is 47 miles from Lennard Isl..........2 miles from Tofino

Just got off the phone with my Cousin. Commies getting 200/day about 55 miles off ukee. says he will have coordinates tomorrow but sounds like Loudoun to me.

I will drop you a line this morning.

Sunday is the better one for me as there are plans to take a couple rookies out for salmon/Hali with Jeff. In saying that, whatever you guys think is best.

Just checked sailflow and swell watch and the weekend looks like it is shaping up nicely for conditions. Of course that can change but anyways looks good for now.

All we need is a good update on the sst's and chloro's.
