Your Salmon Fisheries Are In Peril!- COMPLETE THE DFO SRKW SURVERY BEFORE FEBUARY 12TH

The rules need to change.

What can be done to publicize this story and try to undo the idea that chinook fishing restrictions will help SRKW? Tom Davis seems to have done a good job of developing the story [based on what I've seen at the Langford meeting last winter and his writing in Pacific Yachting] -- but we haven't disrupted the mainstream myth that the whales are starving from a shortage of chinook. Thoughts?

That issue is more able Upper interior Chinooks and stocks of concern..
Yep. The NGOs have really been trying to mix things together and brand all these closures as SRKW habitat protection measures.

We have two interrelated issues with the closures that were introduced under this new minority government:

- SRKW closures at the NA of the Fraser and other parts of the south coast

- Non-fishing period from April 1-July to retain any type of Chinook- marked or wild - in the Salish Sea

DNA sampling by the Avid Anglers has proven that the majority of the upper Fraser stocks of concern are past their migration peak by June. PLUS - the marked Chinook stocks aren’t related to the Fraser brood at all.

Both of these have been branded as the SRKW protection measures.

I personally don’t think that there will be a lot of support or backlash from the general public if the findings of this new research are used to challenge the closures.

Unfortunately, we may not be able to get a lot of attention and support from the public until a new government is in power in Ottawa. We may have a better chance to push for marked fishery openings for the next season while watching the political sh*tstorm that’s been brewing in Ottawa lately.
