My boys are stoked to jig herring. Any idea where and when to go near Vancouver? We found some at Cates Park once.
Thanks

Pretty soon you won't be able to find them anywhere. Georgia strait quota set at almost double last year's - over 30,000 tons in the quota! Not good news for the recovery of the strait.

I remember about 1970 looking at the dock area in either CR or Port Hardy, and solid herring.

Thats quota number is disgusting.

Anyone have any idea how much the fishermen get paid for the herring?

I have heard it is something in the $20-30 per ton range but that seems low. However, if that is the case, it shouldn't be that hard to raise the $600,000 it would take to keep the boats at the dock (arguable less when the cost of the captain running boats, paying fuel, crew etc).
Screw all the upstream money the guys make that are selling to Japan. Those fish belong in the water.

Is this a Pattison dominated fishery?

Major part of the problem I would think. Massive link in the chain of an all encompassing cycle.

All going to s*** and for what? Exports offshore. Such a waste. Unnecessary consumption by people who are unaffected/ uncaring or otherwise unaware of the damage it's doing on a massive scale.

Ocean is screwed big-time. Science doesn't lie. Enjoy it while you can because when people wake up it will already be too late. I personally would like to do something as I am sure many people on here would but I am just trying to get by and help run a business as it is! Capitalism - what a thing it has become eh!!!

I agree and always have. My guys would be thrilled with catching just a few.

Maybe try where you see a bait ball on your fish finder, or where you see the gulls. I know that there used to be some around Gower point.

just a little early in Area 14. There are good numbers of herring-- but they are scattered and in deep water. Not worth jigging yet. But definitely worth dragging a plug across the bottom for the next month for feeders. When the herring move in to spawn they are easy to get. No jigging required-- just a fish skin Japanese jig lowered into them and fill your bucket!

Doesnt really help mainlanders-- but from Nanaimo to campbell River , it works well.

Are you able to travel to Squamish? The Squamish Stremkeepers are having success getting the herring re-established up there. As a kid I used to go up to the Mamquam blind channel to jig herring http://www.squamishreporter.com/201...ing-more-dolphins-to-howe-sound/#.VMcHfi6rErg

Thanks, one of the boys has been carrying around a hearing jigs off and on since Christmas and asking when the herring are coming ...so yes we'd drive to Squamish.
I'd even boat to Gower if I knew there was herring. ;)

Caught some this afternoon at Cates Park: Happy boys. ;)

I saw that a lot of fishermen are catching herring on Gorge way , They are on Admiral's bridge and Tillicum Bridge.
