Where are they?

Great start to the season but it sure has died off. Plus I noticed lots of smaller fish in the 8-12 pound range being caught most of which I think are only 3 year fish.

Went to Hardy last weekend..... Small fish, brought home Zero
Went to WCVI this this weekend.....Small fish except the huge skate :) brought home Zero
Fishing local areas 13-15 all the time..... Small chinook and coho

Catching and killing fish like this isn't even worth the effort in my opinion. I'd rather release them.

My question is though.....Where are they?

northern bc guys said that big schools of big ones are coming on the way now...they should be here by in August.

Not the first time I've heard that one :) it's almost a sure thing as a DFO prediction.

Or the runs are two weeks later this year, or how about they are just later this year, and there's always....they are taking alternative routes this year but the numbers are strong.

Recent reports of fish over 30 coming out of sooke. Vancouver however seems to suck at this point.

Was just over fishing off Esperenza at Rodgers Fishing Lodge. Did the bring my own boat option. Hit lots of Chinooks in the 12 to 25 pound range. Very few Coho though and most of Chinooks were in tight to shore. I wouldn't describe it as easy fishing, but if you were dialed in, the Chinook fishing was hot! Chinooks were very selective if you didn't match what they were feeding on. Mainly needle fish and young of the year herring.

Marked a ton of fish at HITW this weekend and managed to muster up 3 solid pin poppers, boated one teenager.

No comparison to Sooke, unfortunately...buddy took a 31 in Sooke over the weekend.

Full Moon is another one

Must of been some whales pass thru the entire coast this weekend...... LOL

I was fishing off Otter Pt with a friend two weeks ago, we encountered 4 killer whales and all of sudden, fishing became very slow along the shores
of West and East Sooke. Most people didn`t catch anything except coho. Whales have demolished the chinook stocks pretty much for a few days.

On westcoast Sooke has been quite slow. There's a few 30's here and there but thats pretty much normal this time of year... No one I know out there out here is nailing tyees each and every day... Thers a few here an there...But with nearly 80% going back empty handed or with smaller teen springs the big guys aren't there in big qtys. yet...

Its at par or if not a little more quiet than last year so far based on my logbook...But up in Bamfield last week they were just starting to get some big ones...and than renfrew has been turning on... Victoria is totally quiet. Mid July will pick up it always does.

I didn't get out as much off Nanaimo this spring, but overall my results and from talking to others, it was quite a bit slower then last year but with a few bigger fish around perhaps. I personally saw waaaay less bait around this year. haven't been out enough elsewhere (or anywhere lately ugh) to comment.

We agree with cohochinook's post. Esperanza & even Nootka to some degree have LOTS of Chinook at the mouths of the inlet close to shore. 5.5 anchovies & 4" or 5" hardware is also working. Coho Specials are scoring well. Yes there are only a few 30+lb coming in daily but each day for the past week the numbers are getting higher. Yesterday largest Spring was a bright 33lb caught at Ferrer Pt. Nootka's Hot Spot has resently been Beano Pt.
We have 6 strong weeks of salmon fishing ahead of us in Area 25/125. Esperanza's new 1 over/ 1 under rules start tomorrow for all open to fishing water from the surf line into Mozino Pt.( where Tahsis Inlet & Hecate Channel meet)

I'd say some are here and some are on their way. To me this year has been good not as good as last season perhaps but far from my worst year and it should only get better.

I read in the paper Campbell river is having one of their best seasons is that not the case?

From the newspaper article I think Duffer has been getting all from the hump. Good job Duffer, leave me a couple. Its been slow for me compared to last year. Not the same for white meat, lots of small hali.

Worst year since 2007 for me, that year i caught only 2 summer chinook

Fishing has been great.
Lots of bigger fish caught already this year.

It's early yet.
You have to be right place at right time, doing right thing at this time of year.

The popular spots, trolling back and forth with great success will come soon.
August should be awesome!!

Sounds like an ad. Plus I have been texting him and sharing info. If he is not sharing my sharing days are over. Interesting how I alway get texts asking how the fishing is but not telling me how it is.....
