Whats your gameplan???

Whats your gameplan???? Open ended question I know.
Depends you say. I get that too. I'm looking for is a general starting point when I first arrive to a fishing spot. I usually don't get any info as to "where" the fish are, how deep, fast or any of that. So I end up going in somewhat blind for the first day or two. Only a weekend warrior and all help would be great.

You've arrived at your fishing spot, 4 rod's ready, riggers ready, putt'n on the flashers, then ------

Question 1)What do you use - 2 spoons & 2 hoochies? 2 hoochies & 1 spoon & 1 chovie? All hoochies?

Question 2)How far of a drop back?

Question 3)Do you start out trolling fast or slow?

If it is a new spot and you know fish are there, I like to start by putting lines 15' apart starting at 30' and go to 75' in the morning and dropping lower as the sun goes up with my top line at 60-75'deep. Using different types of gear to see what they want, but keep in mind use glow or UV on deeper lines. Usually I like to use a 5" tubbie plug on top , Spoon next with a silver pattern next depth, probably a hootchie in glow or uv next and on the bottom a glow spoon such as a green/glow coyote. As far as speed is concerned use a average speed of say 2 1/2 to 3 mph. The trick is troll in S patterns so if you keep getting hits on outside lines they want a faster speed or if you get hits on inside rods they want a slower speed. This has always worked for me.

Author-Charlie White
In a region where salmon fishing has always won top billing, anglers have often ignored the bottomfish. Yet its ready availability in the waters of Alaska, British Columbia, and Washington and its merit as a fabulous table fish suggest that it is time to correct this oversight.

Whether you're casting for sole or flounder, halibut or lingcod, rock cod or perch, dangling a line using Charlie White's guidance almost ensures a successful catch for kids, novices, and experts alike. Learn about the behaviour of different species, the best methods of catching them, and the ins and outs of equipment, natural baits, and artificial lures. With the aid of Nelson Dewey's detailed illustration, Charlie even shows how to clean and fillet your fish.

The book also includes valuable website addresses for obtaining up-to-date regulations, tidal charts, and more.

who needs a book when you hit the dock like a ton of bricks.
"Walk softly and carry a full fish-tub"
pre-game plan: gather intel from cronies. GIVE to get, I keep a note pad with boatname on every page - I hand out good waypoints like Candy
Do above right and you will be able to;
"fish where the fish are, AND feed them what they have been eating: aka "match the hatch"

gameplan for surfline:
LOOK around at known fish-killers:
Is the bite on ?
Salt dried chovie in the correct size (ponder that a bit....hint salt allows me to have ALL size chovies ready to fish on a trip
LOOK at the water, whats in it, what color is it?
and
LOOK up at the sky: how bright is it?
then choose flasher..only about 4 choices..
Deploy a nice rolling chovie at 22' to Port
Ditto to starbd at 30'
Center rigger gets a approprite size Tomic, only about 4 colors needed
Fish-On !!!! lather, rinse repeat

offshore:
ditto above but also
LOOK for birds

Deploy one at 70'
one at 90'
center Tomic at 110'

:)

The first thing I do when I get to a spot, and on the way there, is look for flashers flying or nets out. That can tell you if the bites on. If I get to my spot and I dont see any action, I may decide to keep going to someplace else. That is, of course, if there is a number of boats already there...
