What Halibut line do you use?

How about leaders? Who's using what?
I tie with 80lb Big Game but interested in options as I don't find it the best against abraision.
I'm too cheap to use Maxima for hali.

Tips

130lb big game mono. Costs $15 for a roll that should last a few years. Just check your leaders after each fish and have some pre tied so you can quickly change out any damaged ones.

Like craven said gangion or power pro would work too and be better for abrasion. I bet you could tie your hooks to 3/8 rope and the Hali wound still take the bait.

I tie my braid right onto the jig or spreader bar. Never have thought about mono leader for halibut. Always seems to work for us. If we are trolling it's just 40 or 50 lb. flouro as usual on the salmon gear. That is the leader behind the glow flasher with just regular 30 lb. Maxima on the mainline off of a Shimano GT4000 reel.

I was unable to get gangion once and had an extra spool of scotty braid down rigging line. Been making leaders with a swivel then a single hook snelled followed with a treble hook 6" from the sigle hook. Works great and lasts well.

I bought a spool of 200 lb mono and use that for all my halibut leaders now. Love that stuff. I can tailor my leader lengths to the type of bait/gear, depth, etc. and it's tougher than nails. After a few days I cut what's been scuffed up and re-tie/crimp.

Yah,that does look like a good knot for heavy mono.I like the idea of a barrel swivel on the circle hook as well. Just
a little nervous bending the eye open and closed again,as it may weaken the eye itself. Any problems that way at all
drpower?

Never had a circle hook thats been bent open and closed again break or fail in any way. Less chance of twisting up, it's nice knowing that swivel is there when the tide starts running... those baits, whatever it is a guy will put on like to spin like an airplane prop don't they!

The only way to get the eye open is with a vice, bolted to a work desk. Once the Barrel Swivel is installed, use the Vice to open the Circle hook up just a bit, it's not necessary but once you add a giant bait, that extra bit might be the difference to a Halibut that is Mouthing and Spitting without you ever knowing it.

drpower: You can purchase circle hooks (15/0 or 16/0) with an open eye at Trotac in Victoria. They are meant to add to jigs or for putting onto a swivel if you want. I close them with my vice in my workshop/tackle room in the basement. I personally don't use a swivel with them unless they are part of a jig.

Good to know,RobH. Next time I'm down the south end I'll stop in there and pick some up,along with some large crane
swivels. The only problem I have with going into that store is I never get out of it without dropping a C note or two.
I'ts just like being a kid in a candy store!!

Thanks Rob, I have purchased those hooks from Trotac I forgot to mention that... I'm just used to opening up the regular ones to get the swivel in I guess. I looked far and wide to find a Solid Braid that says its more than 8 strand, I don't know where I read that Momoi is 16 but I can't find anything. Power Pro Super 8 Slick Braid is 8 strand for sure, I might just get that.

I suppose the biggest answer should be to the question, what's the pull test? In all seriousness how heavy is a fish in water? I use 65lbs on all my reels. Less parabolic drag equals less lead on the finer side. 80 to 120 pounds of breaking strength will simply break the expensive **** you buy. Something has to give. Lots of famous anglers kill them on 65lbs and less.

Thanks for that insight on line strength lollyop. I will incorporate that into my tuna tackle thinking for next year:). Good stuff.
