What Halibut line do you use?

I am going to respool my Halibut reels, Fin-Nor MA30T - Shimano Trevala. After researching the various brands I've chosen Momoi Diamond 80lb 1200 Yards Blue $180 to my door. Does anyone know of this brand or have other preferences they can offer their experience with? I was using Power Pro 100lb on one reel and Tuf-Line 100lb on the other, after two seasons both held up well and there is no way I would be able to tell the difference... going Momoi this time around is just to see if there is any difference.

We've been using 80 lb power pro for the last few seasons.
It's stood up well with minimal re-tying and no break offs.

Take your reel to your local shop have them spool the line on for you it should be way cheaper.

I would go 80lb braid (any brand) on rods 1 and 2 then 100lb on rod #3 to get the bait back a little more.

Still very much a newbe on Hali fishing. Picked up a large drum (2500 yards) of yellow Tuf Line XP off a guy who did a lot of Hali guiding up north. He said it was all they used. 100 lb test but has the diameter of 20 lb mono, so little drag in current.

I've been using 80 power pro for many years - gave up on TUF cause mine became a flat ribbon instead of round like PP
BUT - please let me know how you like the Momoi? I have been reading alot of talk on BD Outdoors and the americans seems to prefer 'Jerry Brown' , then Momoi, then PP and TUF last. I've been thinking of trying JB or Momoi

Momoi is an excellent line, head and shouders above PP or tuffline. I have jerry brown on a bunch of reels and really like it, the key to a quality spectra is how many yarns are used in its construction, the more the better as it is a smoother line. For example PP uses 8 where as JB or Momoi uses 12 or even 16.

I have had the same 100 lb power pro on my hali rods for years. It never breaks and gets rinsed after each use.
Much cheaper to buy it on ebay too : )

I think the main difference is the strand count and coatings. A higher end line will be colorfast and more strands, the Momoi and JB are 16 strand as opposed to Power Pro and Tuff Line's 4 strands (quick google search shows this but don't quote me... I'll try and get some solid information to back this) More strands construct a better line that holds its shape and is stronger, and is more expensive. Hollow Core being twice the price of a high end Solid Core. When I get the line I'll update, and since I'm buying 1200 yards I bet I'll only use half. I have a plan on how to divide the line in 4 equal parts so to distribute the line evenly. I see there are 5000 yard spools available, maybe we should organize a group buy and spooling day haha!

Used 80lb. Tuffline, and 80lb. Powerpro. Can't say I've noticed any real difference between the two. They're both all
around solid lines. This year I'm gonna give the 65lb. a try. I think for the most part 80lb. is "overkill" for most hali
fishing I do off Sooke and Victoria. The smaller diameter of the 65lb. should give me an extra 30-45 mins. fishing time
on either end of the slack tides, which is worth the down grade in line test.IMHO

X2..........I always used 80 lbs Power Pro but switched to 65 lbs for the same reason. Unfortunately the biggest Hali for me off Renfrew for the last few years has been around 60 lbs. At the end of the day 65lbs should be able to do pretty much the same job as the 80lbs for all of my fishing needs. Cheers!

Yes that wht ive been using as well for the last bit is 65 lb test , depends where your fishing cuase we have so much current here and we anchor it does give you more fishing time if I was driftfishing or in slower id use 80 no biggy.

If you want to have fun crank down your drag to "where" you normally set it get your buddy to hook on to the end of the line with a scale and lift like you would on a hali really torgue it!!!!! harder than you play a hali you will be VERY surprised on the results then do it with a slamon rod and reel... see how many lbs of pull it does LOL LOL
have fun

Like Wolf says, hook up two 10-12# cannon balls on the end of your hali line, then try lift them off the floor.
Just make sure you do it in a safe area, just in case your knot breaks (or anything else breaks for that matter).

FWIW.....

I run 100 and 130 XP on my sturgeon rods.....fish these rods roughly 50+ times a year, replace line usually every three years.....

Most fish run 4-6', biggest (so far) 10'4"..... many 7-9' fish. Average daily catch is in the area of dozen fish....

This line has proven great for the big fights and long runs these fish are known for. Only problem I have had with the line is when I don't trim back 2-3 feet after a heavy day of fish... with the sandpaper hide and some like to roll, the line can start to fray.....

80-100lb Braid

Tuff line or Power Pro. Ive used them both. They are both great Lines. Cant really go wrong. Hali are not fussy lol. As long as you trim the botttom few feet of your braid every trip or so, you wont have any issues.

cheers

X3........I also like the minimal drag in current or deep water when using the smaller diameter stuff. I've never had 65 break on me and can't imagine putting that kind of pressure on my gear anyways. Caught a 108 lber on 17lb mono last summer so I'm sure the 65lb power pro is plenty heavy for anything I want to keep.
