I consider my mans space special even though its small and has no privacy. Its a small alcove 3 feet by 5 feet. I am envious of my friends who have these man caves, man dens.

Lets face it I am envious on everyone who is bigger than me.

What is the meaning of the words mans cave? I looked up the words in the dictionary:

A room, space, corner or area of a dwelling that is specifically reserved for a male person to be in a solitary condition, away from the rest of the household in order to work, play, involve himself in certain hobbies, activities without interruption. The male that uses it without interference from any female influence usually decorates this area.

For the intellect it could be the ultimate office space filled with books, video games, computers. For the mechanic it could be the workshop for cars, motorbikes. For the artist it could be the painter, sculpture, pottery . For the Sportsman it could be hunting, fishing, climbing

However we use it it is the sanctuary for man to have his own space. Away from responsibilities, stress, it is our emotional sanctuary.

In a perfect world I would have my lazyboy in front of a 72'' flat screen TV. Streaming movies from my computer. A warm fireplace with a fridge filled with all the elixirs of life. A pinball game machine next to my table tennis table or pool table. A stereo system that would have the ultimate surround sound. Walls covered in trophy photos of the big one. Cabinets full of fishing rods and reels……………….

Alas though in the real world I have my mans corner.

This is my next project. A portable man cave to take my welding/fabricating on the road. Should be ready to roll early spring.IMG_0353.JPG

If a grown man needs to have a man-cave, they may want to take a long look in the mirror followed by serious discussions with the wife.

Seriously?? I look in the mirror every day and am absolutely proud of who I am and where I have come from - I have an amazing wife with 3 kids... and your damn right I want to have, and like my "man cave."

do you sit on your leather couch in your studio condo within the city and tie your fishing gear for the time you "might" get out again??

Relax guys. All I'm trying to do is make a distinction that I live a lifestyle where I don't need to qualify something as "my area", or 'man cave'. In my humble option a self respecting man wouldn't relegate himself to a 'cave' or have to have 'my' dedicated space. It seems....juvenile?

And no, no studio condo for me. I have a house on a nice amount of property in South Langley. With a workshop and storage shed on site. Plus a gym and my home office in the basement, including a wet bar. None of which I consider my 'man cave'.

But then again, the rest of my house isn't decorated solely by the Mrs either. The house is for everyone, by everyone. I don't see a need to label any space as mine.

you labelled a space in your statement as MY home office

This thread is seriously starting to make me feel triggered. Maybe it's time for a safe space on this forum. Lol... I'm going to the garage.

Damien This is a fun thread. Come on not everybody has a workshop, gym, office and even a basement. I think your one lucky guy....... you shouldn't disrespect or demean others that are without

Okay then, I'll play along. Here is our cedar workshop. Not large, at 20x12+ veranda, located on the far north east side of the property. I put there so my big fir trees weren't directly over it. You can kinda see the bar on the right side.

Mostly storage for tubs of stuff that we don't want to throw out. School stuff, old bikes, other stuff that we should give away to charity but never got around to it. But there is peg board with basic tools, yard stuff, L shaped work bench etc. It has power, some LED lights, radio which is fun to tinker around in. Its mostly me out there, as there are some spiders that makes it less than palatable to the Mrs. It would be nice to add a wood stove but I don't trust myself enough to not burn it down.

The vast majority of the fishing gear, rods and reels (and power tools) etc are in my house, similar to what others have posted.

With wood stoves there is alway issues of permits...but a small contained oil heater around $60 at Home Depot takes very little electric as once the oil is heated it just radiates. They have timers on them to. I had a friend who insulated the walls and gyroc them . He found an old skylight and put it on the roof. Found old windows double glass insulated put that in. Finished the ceiling insulated also and it turn out very cozy. He did all his computer work and graphic artist stuff in there. kept it warm with a oil heater even below zero on the outside at very little cost.

Yeah, that's a thought. I'm usually out there only in non cold conditions as my good stuff is in my house. I just like to be able to burn a bit of scrap wood and small branches etc. I have 4 150ft fir trees and various apple, cherry, dogwood and maple trees that like to spread their love.

When I built it, I had the very thought of adding a skylight and a window or two. Just never got around to it as it became more storage than workshop in the true sense. I did partially insulate it and expanding foam spayed it places, but nothing drastic.

My man cave used to be a garage. I covered the walls with weathered cedar boards, put in the corner stone and wood stove all WETT inspected. I don't care what anyone says a man needs a place to watch sports drink beer, butcher deer and clean fish. I also put in a urinal in the back corner.
