What Did You Do To Your Boat This Week?

A lot more than a week project, but good winter project. This October I decided to water/glass bead my old bottom paint off and start fresh. When I did I could see that someone had done a poor repair of a rock hit on the keel area.I decided to grind it all out to see what was underneath and was disappointed to say the least that the guy sold it to me without mentioning the hit and repair.I could see that a hole about 4" x 8" was on the stbd.bow and had been filled with bondo and glassed over.I ground everything back to original good glass and did the repair properly from the outside but wondered if any water penetrated the hull past the balsa core sandwiched hull. So I couldn't leave it not knowing and decided to pull up the cabin sole which was completely full of foam.It took a while to cut out all the foam but when I had it all cleaned out I could see a small area where the hole penetrated the balsa and had spread a few inches all around getting the balsa wet.I've now cut out and replaced the wet balsa and went overboard adding 7 layers of glass (mat and roving) the full length of the cabin to beef up the keel if this ever happens again. It's been gelcoated and I finished framing the sole today with yellow cedar and it's now ready for new foam. The old foam clearly saved the boat from serious harm as it was bone dry with water only in small void area's around the foam. The old sole will go back down and I've bought EVA to cover it when glassed in.I won't sell it to anyone without showing all the pictures I've taken ,it should be better than new when complete.

Nice workmanship! Good decision to pull back the damaged core. Once the water intrusion starts its like a cancer until you cut it out, it never gets better with a bandaid fix.
