Pretty sure if I bring that up with the manufacturer he’ll say the EPA mandates those caps....Meanwhile I just took on some gas about an hour ago (in the pounding rain) to stir up the crap on the bottom of both tanks to see if I can catch it in the fuel water separators—-I noticed rain pools on the gunnel exactly where those caps are placed....even with good cap design, not good placement for sure

We relocated the fuel filler on our Malibu Tyee. The original was placed in the most stupid location next to being underwater - in the splashwell! Otherwise, a good boat.

Went with the probax seats as my back to back that got redone 2 years ago fell apart as the wrong material was used

Started cc rewire and bilge clean out.

While waiting for the media blaster, I'm installing a dedicated AGM battery, up front. Close by, are the necessary venting, switches, fuse and breakers. It will power the bow thruster and the windlass. They will never be operating at the same time. I also installed a DC-DC charger to handle that function. No more 25 foot runs back to the house batteries. Plus, the installation is actually looking quite pretty.

Rolled up paper towels and shoved them down into the filler tubes of both my fuel tanks then got a hose going near the Perko caps to see if that’s where I have been getting water into my tanks

I just misted with the garden hose to try and mimic rain and get it to pool up around the caps—-the paper towels were dry (they were shoved very far down into the filler tubes in order to get clearance with the vented cap) but based on seeing water clearly getting up under the caps and across the plastic rims of the filler tubes, it sure appears those Perko’s are a time bomb waiting to go off

Specific to my cap, which was similar to yours, the water ingress happens when the following conditions are met:

1) Engine is running and air is being drawn into the fuel tank through the cap breather to replace the fuel being consumed

2) There is water pooling around the cap, which gets drawn into the breather instead of or along with the air replacing the fuel being consumed

I started gluing in nipples (yeah I know) into the assembly and then a cap ontop. Looks dumb but it works. Commercial land

Hey InterMech—-yes, that helps alot. When I did the garden hose routine to test water intrusion into the caps I asked the boat builder if I should run the engines. He said no need but my instincts said yes, run the motors, which I did, and based on your comments, the motors should definitely be running for such a test to create the pressure compensation that might pull in the water....

I had a guy tell me today I should smear a thick lubricant on the “O” rings of both caps (??)
