Caught two hagfish in one prawn trap, what freaking mess. Took forever to get all of that slime out of and off the net. The few prawns that were in the trap were all dead, asphyxiated I guess.
What cool, freaky or ugly things have you reeled up?

Last summer reeled up 4 Skates and 1 Wolf eel.

Just googled hagfish and this is what I saw. WTF? Reminds me of something from an old sci fi movie.

The slime they make is worse than their ugly face...
They don't make the slime themselves but the stuff they goo out turns salt water to slime
Oh yeah and they have eyes..... but they are covered with skin.. essentially blind

got hag fish in prawn gear one time what a mess they were fine until the trap broke the surface then instantly covered in slim gross

Hagfish are one sick little creature for sure. Between them and the crabs, there definately isn't much that would be left around for long on the bottom. The mess that these critters make is something else. I read somewhere once that the slime is a self defense mechanism.

I also caught some Hagfish while prawning in Esperanza a few years ago. The slime they release turns to super thick, sticky jelly when exposed to air. Harder then hell to get out of your prawn traps. Also the slime bleached the deck paint on my aluminum boat - very weird stuff from a very weird sea creature.

Actually got a sea gull to eat one of thoses once as it was flying away....funny the bird yaked it up about 15 ft later...pretty funny to watch....... got to be one of the ulgiest things around..... ;(

catch them all the time , i always look into my traps before they break water , usually spot them swimming around , i carefully open the draw string , and they swim out soon enuff , liitle or no mess , lose a prawn or 2 , no biggy , if not , you get one hell of a mess lol

Sprinkle the slime with laundry detergent and hit it with a hose usually cleans it off

Some girls I had out one time renamed the Hagfish to KY eel. There must be a connection!
Caught these a few years ago. More ugly critters from the deep. The crab was brought up while a friend was gathering scallops. It taste like lobster crossed with rock crab!

Local Opal squid are better but if cooked right Humbolt isn't to bad. Humbolts have a bit of an amonia smell when cooked.
