Anybody !!!! any ideas as to who made them.

I have never even seen one of these before and I have been fishing for 50 yrs. Does the weight just fall off and is gone?

That's exactly how they work... the main line is threaded through the small hole on the pin and then threaded through the small hole on the clip. Slid up the line to the desired length and then a bag of rocks, maybe 5-7 lbs. is set in the clip slot and then the pin is installed to hold the weight. When a fish strikes the pin is pulled and the weight is dropped.

Yes these are the same concept. You loose the weight so that is why we used to steal our partners old nylon stockings and cut them up to make rock bags.
Then tie a loop of dacron on the bag to create a loop that can be put into the clip and held with the pin. Once a fish was caught it would slide down to the flasher

Git it, cool idea.

These came in and were used after the old slip weight method, which I always hated. I would prefer to use the lost bag of rock
and not have to fight any weigh.

I haven't even been able to even find a picture of these things on the interweb.

Somewhere in one of my old tackle boxes I have a metal one that works the same way but is spring loaded. It's about 3" long and there is swivels on both ends. It's about a 1/4" round and there is a slot on the round part where you hang the weight/rocks. The fish hits and pulls the spring loaded pin and the weight drops and it's just you and the fish. I'll try and find it and get a picture.

Maybe I'm missing something, but wouldn't it be more fun to use the very heavy rod and line you'd need for your plan, but instead drag around a bag of rocks or 5-7 lb cannon ball, then attach a scotty release clip to a lighter rod to enjoy the playing of the fish more? Poor man's downrigger.
Then again, you fish from shore a lot, so are you going to build a catapult or trebuchet to launch the bag of rocks from the golf course? That would be cool.

Years ago I used these when mooching for springs, but with the advent of downriggers, they went the way of the Dodo. I also used them on the Campbell River Pier. I would use them on the south side when the tide was flooding with about a 50-60+ ft leader. I would hang the weight about 3ft below the mainline and drop it to the bottom so that the cut plug was well below the surface and would rotate in the flowing tide. I might have a few stored away, I will have a look later to day.

I just took a look at the Scotty website and they still make a downrigger release that uses the red plastic pin. The main part of the clip is now an obscure part
that I don't think is made anymore. Next time I'm out trolling and not fishing the shoreline I would like to try fishing with nothing but the old gear. I have caught a few nice fish using this gear in day's gone by.

I have not used them for mooching and am not to sure how to rig them that way but for trolling they used to be a lot of fun. I would love to get a small supply of them again
just to give the a try.

Luhr Jensen made the silver release one.. I was told that peetz came out with the brass version first..

THAT"S THE ONES!!! Thanks for the pics.I have been looking for a few of these for the last couple of years. If they were made by scotty they may still
have access to a few of them. I'll give them a call or an email and see
