I agree with these not really being "secrets", however knowing what colours work does not really translate into knowing "how" to use them for optimum results. [ Time, Depth, Speed, Leader Lenght, ETC.]

Black & white with red around the eye. Good all year round. Springs/coho/Halibut. Buy every one on the shelf. Also I use
Purple Flasher. If no result go faster and realy tease them
into a bite.

Yep, peanut butter..
those split tail things...have put a lot of fish in the boat....they are called Anchovie Hootchies, no longer made - so it does pay, now and then to buy a whole box of some stuff.
Like Charlie said (sort of)...being a Hiliner takes work and MORE than just running winning colors..
in the interest of sharing;
buy really good, sharp hooks
use pre-stretch nylon leaders (Perlon) aka triplefish in 40-50#..broom stiff = action from flasher TO lure
like the other Jim said (my boat is moored crosswise from him)
use beads to space the hooks
use beads BETWEEN the hooks for visual attraction, oh and the RATTLE
use a red and a glow or green bead
use red or black hooks with twinkle or mylar skirts for contrast
LOOK again at the pics, at least two of the hootchies, are really 4

Here on the WCVI, I've noticed that most guys are very secretive. We really need to get over that attitude. We want people to come and use our services, buy our products, etc.

i really appreciate you folks and the wealth of information you have and are willing to post right here. of course having the 'correct' tackle is only a small beginning point but it helps to have several of my favorite superstitions 'valadated' by others.
my all time favorite was an all white skirt topped by an all black skirt. unfortunately these are no longer made, at least i can't find'um, and the current 'cop car' hoochie is not the same.

"gum puckies"..yes, they sometimes work great, although they will sometimes react w plastic and weld/melt to the skirt, as do some twinkle skirt heads...

I think the biggest thing many are forgetting out there is...get out and fish...and experiment and pay attention to what you're doing and whY it works and don't be afraid to mix it up a bit to find out in a given situation. Also, there's a prerequisite...there has to be fish..if there are no fish, there will be no catching.
Everyone knows the formula..42" leader off the flasher, 40 lb testm 18 foot lead off the cable, 3-3.5 mph depending, sharp hooks, etc etc etc. There's any number of colours which work on a frequent basis too...you can have any combination of those out at the same time and be hooking up multiples.
I know a guy who fishes with lures that 99% of sporties don't fish with anymore in certain locations and put the boots to the fleet on a regular basis. Nothing ever changes. He comes back to the dock, tubbed out for himself and his guests on more than the rare occasion, cleans up and goes on his merry way saying little to anybody. All he does is stick with what works, has dialed his technique in with the lures he chooses. I've caught him down at the marina a couple of times and he's using nothing but commercial metal...using spoons which most would say are too large for the bait in the area. He fired back with "you wouldn't think so eh? But see my lure rack there? That's all I use." Interesting stuff indeed.
Likewise, I know a guy who uses White Apexes on half his rods--in the 4.5 or 5 inch size and catches an average amount of fish on a lure which isn't "supposed to" catch springs and 99% of us walk past in the tackle store. Apexes for a go to lure? Who knew?
Then there's this other fella in the same marina......more hoochies than one could choose from....hoochies.....hoochies.....MORE hoochies..and nothing but hoochies---lots of greens and pale variations usually with purple haze and that's all he uses 95% of the time he says..and he comes back with fish as frequently as everyone else.
Get out and fish...specialize in your tackle type...master it...fish it correctly..and you should be catching fish.

I've had some good luck with Apex's over the years. I was fishing at Ferrer Pt last year before they closed it. I had a Watermellon Apex down on one side. Fish hit it like there was no tommorrow. Made one long run until he got into the kelp and broke off.
I also picked up a few nice fish off-shore with the same patterned Apex.

I use about half of the ones you showed here. I see you have a gold hootchy - I used to use that one exclusively when I was a kid fishing with my dad out of French Creek back in the early '70's - I still have a few in my tackle box but haven't used one in ages.

Back in the day, that was the #1 goto hootchy. Walk into any tackle store within 50km of Parksville and that was the main thing they tried to sell you.

I like the sickle hooks. They are sharp and seem to really hook up. They also seem to really hold fish once hooked. I've also been using the siwash sickles on my spoons this winter. It may just be coincidence but this winter I have yet to loose a fish on the sickles.

A couple years back a friend of mine brought a pack of the gold hootchies when we went to Bamfield. I chuckled too until after he put 3 nice springs in the boat one morning on those ugly gold hootchies when nothing else was working. Since then we use them as nice changeup to our more "normal" gear. They do work and sometimes REALLY GOOD!!
