Salmon anglers are gearing up for what could be a good three-day weekend of fishing, plus two more areas in the Strait of Juan de Fuca become fair game.
Some of the best reports are coming from the San Juan Islands or the southwest side of Whidbey Island.
The Roche Harbor Salmon Classic, part of the Northwest Salmon Derby Series, was held Feb. 5-7 and fishing was decent in the San Juan Islands.
"It turned out to be the second best catch ever of the derby with 115 chinook caught [for 100 boats with 344 anglers]," said Tony Floor, the Northwest Marine Trade Association's director of fishing affairs. "On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 8.5."
Most fish caught in the derby averaged 12 to 13 pounds. The second-, third- and fourth-place fish were caught at Humphrey Head and Obstruction Pass.
Other good areas included Lopez Pass, Burrows Island, Secret Harbor, Parker Reef, Point Doughty, Thatcher Pass, Presidents Channel, Point Thompson, Eagle Bluff, Tide Point and Point Lawrence.
Derby results: 1, Shannon Terrell of Bellingham, 18.6 pound chinook, $10,000; 2, Wayne Logsdon of Mount Vernon, 16.1, $5,000; 3, Bret Thurman of Orcas Island, 15.15, $1,500.
More marine areas open this Saturday, including Hood Canal, south central Puget Sound and Strait of Juan de Fuca east of Sekiu.
The Discovery Bay Salmon Derby is Feb. 14-16. Details: www.DiscoBaySalmonDerby.com.
During the derby try in the Strait like Hein, Middle, Coyote and Eastern banks, and Winter Hole and the Humps off Port Angeles.
Salmon fishing picked up on the southwest side of Whidbey Island at Double Bluff and Possession Bar.
"We ended up with three nice fish [including a 10-pound chinook] at Double Bluff [on Monday], and caught them all on cut-plug herring, the [Tuesday] we got three keeper-sized fish at Browns Bay," said Pete Sergeef, a state Fish and Wildlife fish checker.
As is common with winter chinook they tend to move a lot in search of baitfish schools. So a certain place could be good one day, but might not be the next.
With that in mind here are some other good bets: Elger Bay, Langley, Greenbank, the racetrack between Hat Island and Camano Head, Midchannel Bank, Point No Point, Liplip Point, Mats Mats Bay and Eglon.
