Could you attach a straight piece of metal strapping (such as used as a back brace in car audio install) to the radio, slide it into the hole and then bend it at the back and secure to the backside of the dash?

That's a good idea too. I ended up using a little strip of metal to bring the attachment point of the bracket back a inch or so.
