I'm planning a trip to Ucluelet at the end of May. 3 of us will charter a boat to go after Halibut and other bottom fish.

I've been trying to find fishing reports for that period, but nothing. Anybody in the area can tell me how fishing should be.

We are not going after salmon, we have plenty here. We want to go after Halis, Lings, Sea Bass, Rock cod, Snappers, etc to fill the freezer for the year. Hmmm!!

Thanks

Patrice

HiYa,
Timing should be good for the big flatties Patrice. Already seen a few farther North, and generally by the end of May, beginning of June, they should be there in enough numbers to keep you entertained.
The rest are always about <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> so no worries there!

Have a good one buddy!

Cheers,
Nog

Thanks Nog,

It's the birthday present for my wife's father. We've been talking about this trip for a couple of years now and it's becoming a reality finaly. Looks like you had a lot of fun last week in the LML, too bad I was already committed. I'll let you know when the dates are solid.

Do you know if SeanM or any of the Boys are chartering? I'm still on the look for a small guy to take us so that we can do what we want to do. I have a couple of names with availability, but I'd rather go with somebody recommended.

Check out the "Mad Man" Kenny Myer's. He'll get you into what you want and even run the BUCKET in low water in his 12 footer!!

Pass the Pack

RoeBags' suggestion is good, Kenny is GREAT!
For his contact info, and a chat, drop me an E. I'm about at least tonight, but off to the top end of the Isle soon!

Cheers,
Nog

What you'll need to do is let him know that you want 100% bottomfishing trip</u>.
Then you'll need to stock up on those giant 10" Berkley Power Worms-Glo/White and 16 ounce lead head jigs.
Have you picked your tides?

Thanks for the info,

I spoke with Kenny yesterday afternoon and we are tentatively booked for May 26-27. He seems to be the exact type of guide we were looking for, very flexible. If weather permits, he is talking about an overnighter at the hot springs. To be determined...

Man, I can't wait, I've never caught an Halibut.

Nog, I'll give you a call tonight to get the latest reports, a few pointers and BS, I still owe you a shot of Appleton.

Here are the tides for Ucluelet:

2005-05-26 02:20 PDT 12.57 feet High Tide
2005-05-26 05:27 PDT Sunrise
2005-05-26 09:20 PDT 0.85 feet Low Tide
2005-05-26 16:00 PDT 10.55 feet High Tide
2005-05-26 21:11 PDT Sunset
2005-05-26 21:12 PDT 6.19 feet Low Tide
2005-05-27 03:09 PDT 12.18 feet High Tide
2005-05-27 05:26 PDT Sunrise

2005-05-27 16:54 PDT 10.40 feet High Tide

Not sure if it's good or not, but we'll have 2 tides slacks a day and rising most of the time.

That means 10 feet of vertical movement in 6 hours</u>-much too fast to fish bottom effectively IMO.

Ditto

Much too much water moving too fast</u>-you'll have a helluva time getting your baits down 300 feet to the fish and because the tide is moving so fast fish won't be actively feeding during tides.
Yes you'll have a 20-30 minute window between tides to get your baits down/drag something up.

Myself I'd never pay money to fish poor tides like those if I wanted to bottomfish-look for tides with less than 6 feet of movement for ideal conditions.

Would this be better:

2005-06-02 04:14 PDT 3.60 feet Low Tide
2005-06-02 05:21 PDT Sunrise
2005-06-02 10:18 PDT 9.36 feet High Tide
2005-06-02 15:55 PDT 4.87 feet Low Tide
2005-06-02 21:19 PDT Sunset
2005-06-02 22:15 PDT 11.70 feet High Tide
2005-06-03 05:06 PDT 2.83 feet Low Tide

2005-06-03 11:21 PDT 9.60 feet High Tide

2005-06-03 21:19 PDT Sunset
2005-06-03 22:57 PDT 11.87 feet High

Or:

2005-06-04 05:20 PDT Sunrise

That's about it for the dates we can all make it.

Go for June 2 if you can then the 4th-the smaller the swing between heights the better.
Now if only the weather cooperates!

Dang, my partners in crime reminded me that June 3-5 is the Silva Bay Derby. Would there be any good fishing earlier, May 19-20:

2005-05-19 04:14 PDT 4.84 feet Low Tide
2005-05-19 05:34 PDT Sunrise
2005-05-19 10:15 PDT 9.12 feet High Tide
2005-05-19 16:01 PDT 5.01 feet Low Tide
2005-05-19 21:03 PDT Sunset
2005-05-19 22:24 PDT 10.89 feet High Tide
2005-05-20 04:58 PDT 3.89 feet Low Tide
2005-05-20 05:33 PDT Sunrise
2005-05-20 11:11 PDT 9.54 feet High Tide
2005-05-20 16:44 PDT 5.23 feet Low Tide
2005-05-20 21:04 PDT Sunset
2005-05-20 22:59 PDT 11.46 feet High Tide

Tides don't look too bad.

6 feet more or less-looks good!
OTOH-remember that there are a helluva lot more fish of all kinds to be caught off WCVI than anywhere Inside</u>-maybe your partners are caught up in the past a little and need a change of scene <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

I was told that the Silva Bay Derby is June 18-19 this year. Perhaps there is more than one derby?

Remember, it's called "fishing," not "catching."

After many schedule conflicts, we are fianlly able to go to Ucluelet in August. Does anybody know Kenny's new phone number. I tried to check for availability and apparently the number has changed...411 is still listing him at the 723-5252, but he's not there anymore.

Thanks
