Tuna Talk

Love it! It's funny how you can fish big bank (25mile) all the time and never see so many species that are only out 10 miles further. Next year when I have time to plan I'll bring some freediving gear, take advantage of the visibility and film all the sunfish, dolphins etc.

Certain music distribution companies practice the right to restrict public usage such as on utube. Utube does provide a list of usable artists but I have never looked at it. I have never had any of my video's with "The tragicaly hip" songs blocked so I tend to use that music for I know it will not be blocked causing me to re-edit/post video which is time consuming. I am sure you will be ok with that 'classic' selection though. Love the vids. Keep em coming.

I am also thinking of ideas for a Tofino version of whats going on in Bam. I do live here so why not. And that Bam area/setup is very isolated for folks like myself. The problem with Tuff is its still the high season and it expensive at that time of year. Never the less I would like to see more boats doing it here. Anybody have any idea's/interest? Part of me thinks it would be imposable to duplicate what the fellas are doing in Bam but who knows.

your stories around the fire had me at the edge of my seat Kelly! We will look for the crazy guy going head first off the bow @ 60 mile next year. Seeing those dolphins so close, it was hard not to jump in!

....as far as the music choice, it came from youtubes list o' choices, I've got a couple videos I'm currently uploading of us actually battling and slaying tuna. It gets pretty savage at times!! I tried brain spiking one of the fish and it didn't go over so well with the viewing audience....haha.

I really wanted to try to edit a video with various clips but my time and ability with computers is just not there. Maybe one day in winter I will get together with a tech buddy and do a 2012 wrap-up video but for now I will just have to post raw clips with the odd audio track. So long as you guys are there to watch them, I don't mind posting...

Well, when the water is 16 degrees it actually isn't to cold to go for a swim. Ya its cool but not like near shore. I always bring a set of fins and a mask cuz you just never know what you will see out there that you might want to take a closer look at. By the way DFO frowns upon swimming with the dolphins even though they pretty much 90 percent of the time come to you anyway. Just sayin. seems odd to me that they would care when people are swimming with sealions all the time.
You can hear them chirping under water to each other. Its the coolest thing. In my videos of them underwater with the boat stopped you can also here them.

Those are northwest pacific right dolphins clearly id'ed by the absence of a dorsal fin. They are commonly mixed in with White-sides as well.

Here are some photo's of rissos we saw on one of our last trips. They are HUGE and it was cool to watch them because they jumped like all the other dolphins. They were a bit shy though. These things are huge. they are the size of small orcas so they are very interesting to view.

we saw a group of about 6 Risso's during the shootout. They were awesome! And as you describe, quite large. It was at a time where there was no less than 4 species of dolphins around the boat. I have video of the school that Chris and Jeff were pestered by as well, numbering well into the hundreds. It was one crazy day.

What was the 4th species? NW rights, whitesides, risso's, and ???

there were some small streamlined looking things...maybe they were small nwrights. I only saw 3 of them break water at about 70 yards but they basically looked like flying seals. they looked about 2/3 the size, maybe a little smaller, of the rights under our boat....its all pretty new to me so I could have been mistaken. Or maybe I'm counting a whale in the bunch...all I can be sure of is it seemed to be all happening at that moment! thankfully, there is GoPro!

DFO has the rule of no swimming with marine mammals yet there are lots of dive operators that advertise sealion/seal trips. I wouldn't mind talking with DFO on the subject to get it straight or find out if you can get filming permits. I talked to a national geographic photographer who has filmed everything from Killer whales to Harbour seals underwater in BC. His advice was just be smart about it and don't harass the animals. I would guess the rule is to stop operators from offering whale/dolphin trips but who knows. I read Risso's can be aggressive so might think twice about a dip with them. They are sure cool though! Love the scarred up look. I think there are actually more than 4 dolphin species in the NE Pacific, not to mention a few porpoise species but can't find the list i had earlier.

Hey FB,nice vid there!
I have a bunch of good stuff from my gopro and my sonyHD of tuna slaughter and wildlife...but need a new computer video card???and edit program to make it good...winter time project!

I enjoy the wildlife out there as much as the fishing...all the scaring on Risso's is from big squid fighting back apparently!
So we saw Risso,Northern right whale, white sided,Dalls porpoise(around 40 mile) and maybe a glimps of a fin whale....not sure tho, could have bin a humpy but the fin looked a little bigger...and a lucky fur seal!

Oh,and a yellow Warbler landed on deck around 50 mile and came for a ride heading back to land!

Great to see all the vids and pics you guys are putting up, only 11 more months to go.

I'm going to be sitting next you on the Dream Weaver in about 1 month. As your playing a couple hundred pound tuna I'm going to be saying "how's that 11 months treating you Todd lol!!!".

I only have one computer that is fast enough to process my Go Pro videos glitch free, and that is just barely. These 1080P files are HUGE. The salmon stream video I uploaded in "General" section was about a minute and a half long and it took 1hr30min to upload to youtube! I gave up on the hope of putting together a meshed tuna video with all my clips due to similar reasons you mentioned.

I heard someone has seen a leatherback turtle out there? Anyone seen one personally?

I've posted a video or two in the Tuna Trips thread of us putting fish to the deck as well. Just waiting for vid#2 to finish processing

We saw what I believed to be a leatherback turtle on the first day of the shootout. Nearly ran it over acutally, seemed to be basking in the sun. It all happened so fast that we didnt get a chance to take picture.

ActuallY it will be aboard Renegade Mike but yeah

Why split up such a good event before it even really gets going? Bamfield is hardly isolated when your fishing 60 miles offshore daily. Launching in port and running the inlet would be easier for people coming from out of town and even for those over in Tofino/Ukee its only a 10-30 mile run to town. It would make a lot more sense in terms of organizing, sponsors, unity offshore etc if we didn't break it up.

You Bamfield guys seem to be somewhat "elitist" and "snooty" :p........it's a perception that is spoken of widely. I read it on a bathroom wall in the travel information center right at the "T" as you turn to go into Ukie or Tofino. :D ;)

I've seen the places you stay in when in Tofino or Kyuquot fella. Kinda putting your foot in your mouth aren't you lol!!!:p. Bamtown is cool and comfy but still raw.

I have seen a leatherback or two. They are very skittish. Both times I saw them they were holding there head high for a moment, looking right at us and then they were gone. We circled an area for a half hour looking for it but it just never came back up. The government is very interested in reports of such sightings but they really want a photo.

I dont see it as a split up. Bam has its own special thing going on that can not be duplicated. It is special. I see it more as providing more opportunity for others to participate in the fishery. Might just end up being a facebook page that tofitians/ukers and bambers can keep in touch and get hook up with boats. Requardless it seems inevetable that little fuctions like Bam will be popping up here and there. Plus, sometimes we have the good water over here and sometimes it is over there and sometimes the fish bite or they don't. It will be iteresting to see what the charter guys do with this.
