Liberals Ban Semi-Automatic Firearms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –

November 22, 2022

OSHAWA, ON–Today, rumours that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government will ban semi-automatic rifles and shotguns are confirmed.

An amendment to Bill C-21, currently before a House of Commons committee, was tabled today that will ban all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns capable of accepting an external magazine.

That Bill C-21, in Clause 1, be amended by adding after line 15 on page 1 the following:

(g) a firearm that is a rifle or shotgun, that is capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that is designed to accept a detachable cartridge magazine with a capacity greater than five cartridges of the type for which the firearm was originally designed

This amendment also contains a huge list of firearms specifically identified by name, including the Simonov SKS and all variants, of which 22 are listed by name.

But the amendments are far worse than that.

Formerly unregulated spare parts, such as barrels and slides, will require a Possession and Acquisition Licence to purchase and possess.

The definition of “Prohibited Firearm” will be legislatively expanded to include any firearm “capable of discharging a projectile with a muzzle energy exceeding 10 000 Joules”, “a firearm with a bore diameter of 20 mm or greater” as well as all semi-automatic long guns with detachable magazines.

Liberals also propose to ban 3D-printed firearms by outlawing possession of “computer data that pertain to a firearm” … “that are capable of being used with a 3D printer, metal milling machine or similar computer system…”

Liberals propose to criminalize the distribution of this “computer data” used by 3D printers and CAD machines.

This is a glimpse into the newly created offences for which the majority of Canada’s 2.2 million licensed firearms owners will now be criminalized, should these amendments to Bill C-21 become law.

More details to come as we dig deeper into this latest Liberal assault on RCMP-vetted, federally-licensed firearms owners.

The criminal possession and use of smuggled handguns, rifles and shotguns will, of course, remain unaffected by any of these measures.

Conservatives say Liberals cross ‘red line’ with bid to restrict firearms used by hunters

Conservative MPs say the government is crossing a “red line” with its last-minute amendment to ban semi-automatic rifles and shotguns primarily used by hunters, farmers and sport shooters.

The House of Commons Public Safety Committee met on Thursday to continue its clause-by-clause consideration of Bill C-21, proposed legislation to further restrict access to handguns in Canada.

Committee members spent nearly the entire two-and-a-half hour hearing debating a Liberal amendment which would ban hundreds of additional models of rifles and shotguns, impacting hundreds of thousands of legal gun owners across Canada.

Loyd said the government is impugning democracy by removing the ability for the measure to be debated and studied from the start of the legislative process. The Liberals tabled the motion Tuesday after the second reading debate, and the committee’s study on the legislation concluded.

“It has precluded our ability to bring in witnesses, to bring in experts to talk about this issue and debate this issue,” Lloyd said. “It’s just been tabled, dropped as an amendment after we have completed our vigorous study.”

On Oct. 27, police experts told the committee that C-21 does not address the real issue of illegal firearms. Chief of Regina Police Service Evan Bray said restricting lawful handgun ownership will not meaningfully address the real problem, while president of the National Police Federation Brian Sauvé said the proposed legislation “primarily” targets legal firearm owners who have followed government regulations.

What to do?

From the CCFR:

Bury their desks in letters!!!

I know ... I'm sick of it all too. But our silence is consent. We spend how much time commiserating on social media or with friends about the Liberal government's constant attack on the legal firearm community? Let's refocus some of that time on flooding their offices, and burying their desks in letters. Yes, I mean paper letters. Here's why.

Provinces Oppose Proposed Expanded Firearms Ban

CANADA, November 25 - Released on November 24, 2022

Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are united in opposing a proposed ban that would affect hundreds of thousands of firearms owners in Western Canada:

On November 22, through last-minute amendments to Bill C-21, the federal government moved to ban hundreds of new models of legally owned firearms and shotguns.

The amendments will criminalize hunters, farmers and target shooters who collectively own hundreds of thousands of firearms that could soon be prohibited.

"If these amendments are allowed to proceed, Bill C-21 will be the most sweeping and arbitrary ban of firearms in Canadian history. The federal Liberals claimed that they were never going after hunters, farmers and target shooters - they lied. This is clearly part of a push to ban legal firearms ownership altogether." Tyler Shandro, Minister of Justice for Alberta

"The rifles and shotguns that law-abiding Saskatchewan farmers, hunters, and sport shooters use will soon be confiscated by the Trudeau - NDP government. These men and women will be criminalized overnight. Saskatchewan will not stand idly by while the federal government yet again attacks law-abiding citizens instead of focusing on crime." Christine Tell, Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety for Saskatchewan

"Manitoba continues to raise significant concerns regarding the proposed measures that will punish law-abiding firearms owners while doing little to address illegal importation of firearms from the United States. The federal government should focus its attention and resources on illegally imported firearms, and those who commit crime with guns, instead of measures that target law abiding citizens. Manitoba's government stands united with Saskatchewan and Alberta in opposing the federal Liberal government's confiscation plans." Kelvin Goertzen Minister of Justice and Attorney General for Manitoba.

Trudeau targets hunters with gun bill changes that assault Canadian heritage

The Trudeau Liberals aren’t even hiding it anymore, they are coming for hunting rifles and shotguns.

That theory became reality, and fact, on Tuesday when the Liberals unveiled a number of amendments to their gun control legislation known as Bill C-21.

In May 2020, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced an immediate ban on what he called “military-style assault weapons.” The Liberals portrayed this as taking “weapons of war” off the streets.

“You don’t need an AR-15 to take down a deer,” Trudeau famously said.

Maybe you don’t and most hunters I know wouldn’t use an AR-15 for deer hunting, but the Remington 742 and rifles like it have been used for deer hunting for decades. That rifle and those like it will now be banned.

One of the Liberal amendments to their own bill, only moved for vote after all witnesses have been heard from and testimony concluded, will ban hundreds more models of rifles and shotguns.

The changes in the amendment make it very different from the bill that was sold to the public, one that was focused on dangerous weapons used in American mass shootings – now it’s about hunting rifles and shotguns.

The changes will potentially add $1 billion or more to the cost of the buyback that is attached to the legislation. You can’t ban millions of additional firearms, including some of the most widely-held guns in Canada, without driving up the already exorbitant cost.

This move could be flippantly described as political theatre aimed at convincing voters that the government is doing something. The problem is this move is more insidious than that alone.

It is also an all-out attack on Canada’s hunting and shooting history.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. This bill is not likey to pass. It's pretty extreem.
I don't know about that. He has the seats and most MP's don't have a clue about firearms.

Weird stuff like banning the single shot Ruger No.1, a single shot rifle, because there is one rare chambering in 460 Wby. which is over the max 10,000 jueles muzzle energy.

Trudeau government targets law-abiding gunowners, again

This week, in a move that stunned gunowners across Canada, the Trudeau government unveiled several new amendments to Bill C-21, first introduced earlier this year, which if passed in the House of Commons will represent the largest gun ban in Canadian history.

The proposed amendments prohibit all semi-automatic rifles and shotguns “capable of discharging centre-fire ammunition in a semi-automatic manner and that is designed to accept a detachable cartridge magazine with a capacity greater than five cartridges”—in other words, most firearms used by hunters in Canada. If the amendments become law, millions of Canadians will instantly possess illegal firearms, which—if not handed over to government officials—will be confiscated.

The government has made this move, which will do basically nothing to address gun crime, during a wave of gun violence. So far this year, there have been 351 shootings in Toronto alone, with 41 people killed. According to the Toronto Police Service, most guns used in violent crime in Toronto—mainly certain types of handguns prohibited in Canada—are smuggled into the country.

Of course, this latest attempted gun ban is part of larger trend. In a few short years, the Trudeau government has mandated the confiscation of more than one million firearms, with a total value of more than $4.0 billion, all owned by law-abiding Canadians. These confiscations are based entirely on vague claims about potential threats to public safety, will do basically nothing to make Canadians safer, and target guns not criminals.

If you are interested, now is the time to write your Senator:

Dear Senator ****,

I am writing to you today as a Canadian citizen and a resident of BC to request that you and other members of the senate send Bill C-21 back to parliament for proper debate.

As I am sure you are aware this bill is cobbled together with various Orders In Council and amendments made to the bill after committee debate had closed. The amendments made after committee and the use of the Order In Councils have deprived myself and other Canadians of having our elected representatives being able to fully and completely debate this act in parliament, therefore depriving me and other Canadians of our right to be properly represented by our elected officials.

This bill is particularly onerous for many reasons, my three main concerns are:

It is clearly directed at millions of Canadian firearms owners who have been tested, vetted, licensed and monitored by the RCMP and does nothing to address any of the real issues facing Canadians because of criminal gangs and their willingness to engage in violence using illegally acquired firearms, or the smuggling of those firearms into Canada.

By including all of the previously “banned” firearms into the amendment it has the look of possibly evading the earlier promised “buy back”. This is particularly frightening as the only protection Canadians have from confiscation of privately held property without cause or compensation is legal precedent going back to the Magna Carta. There is no protection of property rights in our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This bill involves confiscation without cause, possibly without compensation and at least without adequate compensation. Therefore it is a significant infringement upon the freedoms and property rights of millions of law abiding Canadians firearms owners and possibly a significant erosion of the property rights of all Canadians.

The amendment intentionally targets a great many firearms currently and historically used for hunting & sport shooting in Canada. Despite the government's assurances they would not be targeting hunters, farmers and sport shooters, they most definitely are. I am both a lifelong hunter and sports shooter in my sixties, and have been involved with those activities all of my adult life.

There are other aspects to C-21 which are problematic as well but I do not wish to waste your time with a dozen page dissection of the issues and concerns I have with this bill.

In short Bill C-21 is onerous, expensive, ineffective, unreasonable and worthy of return to parliament if for no other reason than the opportunity for proper debate.

Best regards.

Liberals say they're not trying to ban hunting rifles. Here's why that's a lie

Last week, the Liberals quietly introduced an amendment to a piece of gun control legislation that would ban thousands of Canadian hunting arms, constituting the largest single gun ban in Canadian history. After the amendment became public, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced he had “no intention whatsoever” of banning hunting rifles or long guns.

The problem is, Mendicino’s claims aren’t true at all. Even a cursory look at the list quickly reveals that it’s chock full of purpose-built hunting arms, many of which have likely never been near a battlefield or crime scene in the last 100 years. While prior Trudeau government gun bans at least attempted to only select firearms that had “assault-style” aesthetics, this new list proposes to criminalize hundreds of rifles and shotguns that are low-powered, slow to fire and only ever designed to shoot birds, deer or skeet.
