Transport Canada Boat Certification

HiYa Ladz,

I need to know who to contact to get a newer rig certified under TC guidelines for charter purposes this season. Don't really care overly much as to the cost, but certainly don't want to deal with a dork in this matter. Any and all advice would certainly be appreciated!

Boat is up in Tofino at this point.
Hoping it doesn't have to be on The Pond for this to happen...

PM is OK if it is sensitive to anyone...

Hoping...

Wasn't a Tofu Boat actually. Just happens to be in storage over there at the moment is all.

Here She is:

Very recent 282 Grady White SailFish. V Squared hull, Twin 225's with no hours, and all the latest in electronics! Gonna make one SWEET Ride this season, and a hell of an upgrade for me! My tail is waggin' so hard my eyeballs are wiggling too! ;)

Just need to change those BC numbers to a C Registration and collect the proper stickers. Could REALLY use a few pointers in that regard!

Still Hoping...

Cheers,
Nog

Kimberly Mikoula was very helpful to me Nog. She is in the Kelowna office of TPC Marine Division. Get ready to wait a while as it's the things that happen or should I say DON't happen from back east offices.

Lots of hoops to jump through for you ahead. Oh and $$$$$$$.

God luck to you

Kimberly Mikoula at transport canada in Kelowna is a good contact to deal with. I dont have her contact info handy, I found her very helpful from beggining to end cutting trough all the TC BS of registering and blue decaling a boat. I found her the best to deal with, and once you get going stick with and deal with the one person.

Nice boat, have fun

Welcome to the Grady bunch Matt. That will be a sweet ride. You can get all the forms off the TC website. If you sweet talk Kim, she can also send them to you as a pdf attachment. You will need to take careful measurements of the length, width and depth to calculate your gross tonnage. You will not be able to complete the TC form to register for the C numbers without completing the gross tonnage calculations. They will also want you to do the stability testing depending on the year of vessel - think pre 2005 you need to do a stability test, post 2005 if the manufacturer completed the ISO 7000 testing including stability you can use their test data.

Cheers Nog,

Kim is away on holidays (supposedly back this week) but I have all the forms here. Give me a call on Monday morning and I will forward them and walk you through them.

Sweet Ride! Congratulations...

Nog , your new ride (very sweet) will probably fall into the over 5 gross ton category which may cause you a little more paperwork. I live in Vic and am down to the Transport Canada office most weeks. If I can give you a hand feel free to email me. info@C-TowVictoria.ca

Beemer / Nog using the correct naval architect formula you will be under 5 ton ! When I worked for Daigle Welding and Marine / Eagle Craft Boats most of the custom built crew and sport (Guide) fishing boats with cuddy's had to be 32' or under with a 9 1/2 Beam or under to make it under the 5 ton commercial catagory.

Congrats Nog very SWEET ride !!!!!!!!

Cheers

Were talking transport canada here Myescape! From what I can tell most sportboats over 26' seem to be over 5 gross tons according to their system of calculation. Does anyone on here have a Grady 28 that has gone through the process in the last 2 years?

beemer

I doubt that his boat will truly be over 5 gross tons. The measurement only includes the cubic volume of enclosed spaces. A Grady doesn't have a lot of enclosed space. The forward cuddy is about it.

Beemer in the two years I was there we did well over 30 DOT inspections including stability tests and required upgrades. Plus was involved with a number of boats built for commercial guides and eco tours. Check there website there lease crew boats up to 32' are under 5 gross ton and they fall under the exact same DOT rules. I think I might just know what Im talking about. Nog 100% sure your boat is under 5 gross ton period.

Cheers

From Transport Canada's Vessel Reference Tables
LOA in Feet; 26.25' = 4.6 GROSS Tons or 2.3 NET Tons
LOA in Feet; 26.25' to 27.89' = 5.0 Gross Tons or 2.53 Net Tons
LOA in Feet; 27.89' to 29.53' = 6.0 Gross Tons or 3.01 Net Tons

This is valid on vessels which have a maximum breadth of less than 4.8 meters and whose Cabin covers 70% or less of the boats LOA. It's safe to say that the Grady would have a Net far below the 8 meter x 5 ton limits.

Island Outfitters has a 30 ft Grady and it makes the under 5 gross tons

I call BS on that BIG TIME...Our 31 Pursuit is nearing just over 6GT, no way the 1ft makes a difference...they are definitely doing a bit of fibbing in their measurements if they say its under 5GT.

Also...its not NET 5 tons...its about the Gross if you need additional equipment (ex Liferaft) and Limited Masters license.

MyEscape...I'll guarantee the 30ft Grady is above 5GT...and even the 28 Grady depending on its breadth...as our 27ft Grady with a narrow 8' 6" is 4.8GT.

It just goes to show you that the system works differently for different people that said Borris from Victoria Transport Canada himself came and did all the necessary measurements ,so perhaps Serengeti you might not know everything there is to know about this subject although you sure seem to think so
