top 3 hali baits

Freezer burnt alby's!? That makes me sad. Did you buy these for bait only, or were you able to cook and eat some?

I agree its sad they were wasted, initially bought for bait as I know an old school California hali/tuna fisherman that swears by them ( and to show my son what an alby looked like) Fishmonger said they were f'd and going to be chucked soon, but the loins looked okay to me so we lightly salted and smoked. They were still amazing in our eyes.

never tried mackeral but i bet the hali's would love em....

Nice to see someone mention the tuna belly's .

Oily is an understatement lol.

I'm with Dogbreath. We use anything really. Mostly xtra large herring on a spreader bar but sometimes we use Mudrakers and big grubs with success. This is all drift fishing kicking her in and out of gear a lot.

So to keep with the program....

1) Xtra large herring on a spreader bar
2) Large white grubs
3) Orange, black, and glow mudrakers

Note: the reason I don't use belly's much is because they get eaten lol.

Don't want to derail a great thread, but I am wondering why anchoring is the most common way people seem to fish for halibut in the Victoria and Sooke areas, but seems rare in other areas? I might be wrong, but I get the impression that in most other areas i.e. Nootka, North Island, Nanaimo etc. anchoring is much less common and drifting, back trolling and other methods are used instead.

If this warrants a new thread, perhaps the administrators can move this.

Just start a new thread. It's pretty easy :).

when we commie fished them , we would stack 5 large white plugs with heavy short leaders and flasher on top...
when we were in them they would load up the line....
