top 3 hali baits

salmon belly, mackerel, herring

Salmon belly, herring, octopus. On the same hook, in that order. If the current is ripping I like the power bait grubs too, but not with as much meat attached.

Note: I don't catch many halibut.

#1 - Pink head, gills/collar/ full belly strip anal vent to chin . in that order , will produce in any situation
#2 - octopus when available , especially in some of my more reefy/rocky halibut holes that produce better size on average
#3 - Herring, would be number one but generally cant keep it on bottom long enough before some other creature has sucked it up.

all fished on tandem j's with yamashita glow skirts with the pink overlay

Haha....too late into this thread but was going to suggest the first person who posts salmon belly should be banned.
:p BEST part of the salmon, especially smoked.....and wasted on a fish that will bite on SO much else! Hahaha

pink salmon head and belly.
any other salmon head and belly
octopus
just about any fairly heavy jig bounced up and down in the mud...
i would imagine crab would work also as have found that in there bellies when caught shallow...

Smaller salmon head with herring jammed thru it's throat hole so both heads are facing the same way finished off with some scent and a big ol circle hook... You generally don't have to deal with anything under 30lbs with that set up

J hooks are not release friendly! good for gut hooks!! too easy to swallow!

fresh bellies soaked in a bag overnight with blood.
cod fillet
herring

I find a glow powerbait tail or herring works well. With herring small halibut and other species can pick your pocket pretty easy. I never run the same bait always put a buffet down as some days the herring rules and others the powerbait is supreme. I also pour the scent to both even the scented power bait. One method that never fails is gut a salmon do your best to hook a big pile of guts on the hooks, works every time just a little messy. Seems fishing the edges of contours is most important I have found.

My favorite way is
Stern into the current, bump kicker in and out of reverse(as needed)..and bounce.no free meals.

Nothing like feeling a hit on a jig.spreaders are just freakin weird man.

1. salmon parts, 1/2 baby octopus and scent
2. herring, 1/2 baby octopus and scent
3. NA

I drift with spreaders and my secret weapon (wife) maintains boat position. Nothing huge but it is consistent. :D

Pink salmon head with duel circle hook ( only if the rod man is experienced with hook sets )
Albacore strip with a trailing octopus tentacle ( recently bought 4 freezer burnt alby's for cheap, the strips stay on just about as good as octo)
Herring with a large spin and glow on the leader

Freezer burnt alby's!? That makes me sad. Did you buy these for bait only, or were you able to cook and eat some?
