heading up for the long weekend.. Just wondering if there has been much action going on and where. Thanks for the help! Cant wait for a night mission to the hot springs!

Hey there Spooled ... how did you make out? Im heading up there this weekend and any info would help.

Cheers

Sorry I missed your original questions...

Inshore Coho fishing has been consistently stellar on all gear types and big on average. Not many fish turning any color yet, and still feeding hard on the thick schools of Needlefish.

Outer Clayoquot areas like Bartlett, Burgess and Kutcous Islands are all good on most tide situations, with flood always best. Small spoons and mini flashers or Pink Bucktails....

Offshore is tough for the last week, with SE wind and seas pounding a bit. This plus low pressure may have the mature Chinook out there travelling a little faster past or tight lipped?....We have a good looking 4-5 days in the forecast, and will be able to have the fleet outside again looking for a few more of the large whites that are still out there. Trolling med. Herring and large Spoons (Oki Titan etc) between 60-90 feet 8-12 miles offshore should be best.

Halibut and Lings....They're out there....

Call us at the shop 1-888-534-7422 for updated info, or stop in on the way to the boat launch.

Might see you before you read this, but Weather is stellar right now, and Coho are still chomping hard.
Halibut action is likley better than Chinook right now, approx 4 miles offshore.
If I am not in the shop, Megan can set you straight on what is happening..She is on the water until she works in the shop later today.

Jay,

I'm always impressed with your well written, detailed reports and your sharing of helpful info... I just wish I lived closer to the action!

I'm thinking of coming down for the weekend of Sept. 19th, staying at Ahousat General Store for a little COHO action in Russel channel, Tibbs, Bartlett etc. With what you know, what are the chances that there will still be a few fish around then? I might miss the great weather but, oh well, as they say, "a bad day fishing is better than a good day in the office" ....

If I make it down I'll stop by your shop and check it out...

I'd imagine that by next weekend it will stay consistent for Coho in the areas you mentioned. We are seeing absolute Chrome bullets in the 8-16 lb range on average, and not much sign at all of mature colouring so they are a ways from the rivers....

Yeserday Our Fly boat landed 3 over 15 while casting and ???? others while Bucktailing in the area you are planning on fishing, so they are out there. Offshore slowed a bit for Coho action from insane to just busy.

Stop in on your way through and we'll try and help you out.

Thanks Jay for the info.

Its looking likely we'll be heading over and will stop in and get set-up.

Fished Sat. afternoon at Catface and Monks. Pretty slow for us but my nine year old son did a fine job playing a good sized aerobatic coho to the boat only to have it spit the hook. :(

Any suggestions on where to try fishing the Tofino inshore?

Since the last serious blast of Rain on saturday night and big tides right now, the Coho fishing has definitely slowed down.
Incoming Tide at Kutcous or Chetarpe pts are your best bet. Even the bait was pretty thin, likely hunkered down in the sand while the tide whips past.

Good forecast coming for a while, and just hope that the ample rain we had on and off for ten days didn't make them all move on down the coast...our local Coho should be arriving for a while yet, though thinner in numbers.

Thanks Jay,

Saw your boat at Kutcous. We ended up fishing there, Tibbs and Burgess. We got coho at all three spots but had to be patient. Great weather and had lots of fun, as evidenced by my son's expression:

'til next year...

With the weather and tides stable compared to the last report/post, Coho action has turned on fairly good again.
My Fly boat was in to approx dozen quality fish yesterday on Bucktails..
Today a little slower with more followers and less hits overall, but stellar weather for late September and good numbers of fish.

Halibut and Feeders offshore going good as well, and Tuna out approx 40 miles .....but too busy working on my new shop to drop it all for a day offshore.

Lots of Lings this time of year for light tackle fun.

Update;

Swell is going up and down, (literally) so offshore has been less of a focus, but Coho fishing inside is still going off!!

One of my guides called part way into his second trip today and told me that he was going non-stop all day on big Coho, all on the surface (Bucktails and long sparse Streamers that I have been playing around with)
He said the day was text book aside from a FN vessel that shanked off his whole fly line on a long running fish without a hesitation. 3 boats in the whole area and you'd think that it would all work out fine,,,,anyway awesome late season action and I have lots of Fly lines in the shop.

Rain coming and tides building again so we will see what happens later in the week, but absolutley excellent for late September.
