Family rescued after boat turns over near Tofino

Times Colonist February 13, 2011

Five people, including two young children, were rescued Saturday morning after their fishing vessel overturned in heavy winds off Tofino.

The Victoria Joint Rescue Coordination Centre became involved around 9: 30 a.m. after the 12-metre prawn fishing boat capsized about 10 kilometres north of Tofino in Bedwell Sound.

Five people -three adults and two children aged four and six -were drifting in a lifeboat, maritime co-ordinator Troy Haddock said.

The vessel's emergency beacon was activated and a coast guard boat arrived about an hour later.
Haddock said all the family were wearing life-jackets.

They were taken to shore and treated by B.C. Ambulance paramedics for hypothermia. No one was seriously injured.
Haddock said it appears the family is from the Tofino area and were the owners of the boat.

At the time, there were southeast winds of about 40 knots, but it is not clear whether that was what caused the boat to capsize.

The Transportation Safety Board will likely investigate.

Good to hear everyone is ok

cheers to that!!! did they need to be out there? thanks god theys okay!!!

It wasn't just a prawn boat. The gentleman in question is an absolute salmon and tuna highliner and comes from the most famous fishing family from Tofino as well as used to be my neighbour. It's shocking to me that he would have problems in mostly protected inlet water. Thank God all were safe.

just to show you it can happen to anyone at any time good to here they are safe. how come it took the coast guard an hour to go ten miles. "

This report says 30 minutes , big difference.

By Westcoaster.ca Staff TOFINO — Thanks to an automatic distress radio beacon, a group of five people, including two children, were quickly rescued when their fishing vessel capsized in Bedwell Sound off Tofino Saturday.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre received the distress signal at 9:30a.m.

The Cape Anne Coast Guard boat was dispatched from Tofino within five minutes of the radio beacon and was on scene within 30 minutes, said Steve Church, maritime coordinator of the JRCC in Victoria.

The boat was from Tofino, and all five people on board were wearing survival suits. No one was seriously injured, although BC Ambulance also responded.

Winds were out of the south-southeast and gusting up to 40 knots on Saturday.

“Visibility was poor; less than a mile,” said Church.

He said the automatic distress beacon (Emergency Position Indication Radio Beacon or EPIRB) with built-in GPS allowed the Coast Guard to respond without a call-out from the vessel’s captain.

WorkSafe BC or another agency associated with vessel safety may look into the incident if applicable, said Church
