I am planning my first trip to BC this summer (assuming I can afford the gas and diesel) and I was leaning towards Tofino for salmon and Halis. Is this a good time of year and can anyone give me a general idea of what should be happening in terms of a bite?

Secondly, where do you get the most trustworthy weather reports for the area? I am a rookie and will need to be very careful about watching the weather.

Thanks

The bite depends on the tide. There should be fish around.Pick any bank off Ucluelet.Watch for fog.Gps is necessary, radar is handy. Weather?check Enviroment canada website or big wave dave web site.It well give you lots of information.PS If your new to the coast?it can be very dangerous out there so know what your doing.

Very wise words,, heed the advise..

there are some great places to fish Tofino way
jay, who I believe frequents this site runs a tackle / charter ? business there..he has advise to heed.
Weigh West is where I stay, lots of decent data from the dock master and guides there - they want you to catch fish and be happy. You might even book a day the first day to learn the area/gear, etc.
offshore of Portland Pt is good
thru deadmans pass (get the hbr chart and or have a good gps/radar) leads north to catface, etc.somewhat sheltered inside spots
farther north is Sydney inlet and the hot springs..
all in all great place

Late July should be your focus this year, as opposed to August.

It is a good time for Chinook, Coho and Halibut. Bottomfish along the outer banks is normally productive.

A charter is a good plan if you are new to the area to learn the basics of inshore vs offshore fishing and travel.

We are glad to help you with specific questions, the right gear from our shop or a charter if you need.

We try and keep updated reports on our site www.tofinofishing.com if you want to use that as a reference.

Hope your plans work out for a great trip.

Charter!! Unless you have fished the open Pacific at some other location other than Tofino, leave the sweaty stuff to someone who knows the ocean and just enjoy the fishing. You can get into a world of trouble unless you've got experience. Your call.

The entire coast is good during that time frame. The bite where ever you go will be good. Take lots of anchovies! You can expect fog in the early morning and swells of about 10 feet offshore. Wind chop of 2 feet starting around 12pm. The bite will be best early in the am... check the tides! Fish the incoming tide in the early morn.

Yes, everyone needs to be carefull, but if you watch the weather you will be fine... if you have a VHF, listen to the weather channels. You can file a float plan with the Coastguard, which is very good!

YOU SHOULD CATCH A LOT OF FISH!

"IF"??? [:0]

Someone, much smarter than myself, told me years ago, "Never get in a boat that does not have a VHF radio, and a compass."

And to his sage advice, I would add a mapping GPS chartplotter. Especially on the West Coast. A bit of fog, and all those rocks look pretty much the same. [xx(]

I have a little website I mainly just use for myself. It has links to Big Wave Dave, weather and tide info among other things. Its not real pretty but it will help you to easily find the info you need before going out.

Tips up!
