Time to stand up for ourselves

Following Tonelli's advice myself and 3 friends emailed the DFO on this. He made it easy with links to the DFO email and to find our local MP. I got confirmation from both that my email had been received. Doubt it makes a difference, but took 3 mins to craft and send with some help from AI. It's ridiculous we're in this position, but with a decade + of Liberal mismanagement, here we are.

The liberals are back door behind the scene dealing crooks. This is absolute b.s. save the whales is like no different from fighting climate change. We can’t do anything about it.
Taking the whales out in the 60-70’s for aquariums set the stage.
I am loving the story I read recently that Bill Gates said he was wrong about the climate crisis

Check news just announced that a new baby killer whale had passed and talked about how the southern resident killer whales are suffering from pollution, inbreeding and boat noise no mention of starving and we could cure the boat noise if we didn’t have whale watch boats chasing them down every chance they get

  • 1960s-early 1970s: Sharp Decline The population was severely impacted by live captures for marine parks and aquariums during this period. Approximately 47 Southern Residents were removed, significantly reducing their numbers.
  • 1974: First Official Census The first complete photo-identification census in 1974 recorded 71 whales. This established a low baseline following the live captures.
  • Mid-1990s: Population Peak After the cessation of captures, the population slowly increased, reaching a peak of 98 individuals in 1995/1996.
  • Late 1990s-early 2000s: Rapid Decline The population then experienced a rapid decline of about 20% due to lower birth rates and higher mortality, falling to 78 whales by 2000/2001. This decline prompted their listing as endangered in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Mid-2000s: Brief Respite Numbers temporarily stabilized, reaching 89 individuals by 2006.
  • Post-2011: Continued Decline Since 2011, the population has generally declined again.
  • Current: Endangered Status The population has hovered in the 70s in recent years. As of the July 1, 2024 annual census, there were 73 whales, though a subsequent birth brought the unofficial number to 74 individuals.
