What an asshole this guy is. I just tried to inquire about a place for this summer as my first choice place is not available. I messaged him through airbnb and he would not accept my inquiry about reservations as I don't have enough reviews on airbnb.

What a dick. I can't even believe this.

Rant over.

Weird, I have no reviews on Airbnb and have stayed there. No problems with communication or booking last season. Slim pickings for accommodations in Bamfield.

We booked for this year already and had no issues with communications. I believe he might be a medical professional, could be just super busy?
Sounds like Bamfield will be crowded this year!

Maybe he was having a bad day. But I'm still not impressed by him.

Here's a screen shot of the communication. Immediately after he declined my request. I won't be recommending him to anyone in the future.

Not sure how I'm supposed to review properties when i just signed up yesterday.

i do kinda understand his view, its like handing the keys to your boat to a guy that just got his licence yesterday.

But he’s in the rental business.

I agree with EFG, move on, no need to beg to give someone your money.

surprised by his quick/short answer, howard is a very nice guy..

Probably a nice response describing yourself and your party and that you are new to Airbnb might still get a rental...

With respect, I have an airBnB and have sent the same polite message to several people inquiring about staying but had 0 reviews. Airbnb is risky and a few times we have had assholes drinking, partying yelling and keeping us awake late in to the night. A lot of people have 0 reviews even though they have stayed at several Airbnb because they are terrible guests and if the host writes any negative reviews, the guests just reply with their comments saying the place was a dump etc.. We even had prostitution in our suite by two escorts that flew in from Edmonton..two sweet girls, well dressed and 0 reviews. You really have to be cautious and decline anyone that you’re not comfortable with

That's so true I have an acquaintance that was doing the whole air bnb scam renting whole houses then turning them into hostels. He said every time someone gave him a bad review he just threatened them with a bad review as a guest and they'd remove it. Air bnb is in the business of keeping their hosts happy and avoiding bad publicity. Dropping bad reviews is encouraged constantly

Just over 2 years ago, I wanted to buy a dog from a person on the mainland. Offered full price, but, My offer was rejected. I had to send another offer, describing my situation, history of dog ownership, and pictures of my fenced yard, pictures of other dogs and where we would go walking. At the end, my proposal/offer was excepted!
If you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way.
My 2 cents

I get what your saying about just joining and having no guest reviews yet. But I also understand that the person is trying to keep his property safe because there are losers out there that don't treat places with respect. Just a little tip for when you do stay at an Airbnb, make sure you leave a lengthy review for your host, that will help you get a good review. My wife and I have only used them a handful of times but she always leaves them a detailed review. I'm pretty sure the reviews on us helped get us an amazing condo right in Manhattan for our trip NY a few years back.

I should add that we do let guests stay with 0 reviews but we generally have a quick chat with them ( as suggested by Howzer) to see what their story is. If they don’t want to chat or respond to a couple questions, they are not the guests we want staying in our rental.

We have an airbnb in Port Alice - bookings are accepted automatically and we rarely had any issues. I think most issues are related to how the place is described, pricing and location.
Makes no sense to me that ExFlyGuy should have to try to justify or beg to get to stay somewhere.

This might be a better angle than going online and calling the guy a dick and an asshole.
You only posted screen shot of his polite reply. Maybe he got a gut feeling from your enquire.
His right to rent to who he is comfortable with.
I'd reply politely and hope he does not see your post here. LOL

I just think it is weird to evaluate your guests before taking a reservation. A proper Inn does not do that imo. If you want to avoid riff raff, make sure the description of your property clearly indicates who you cater to, and then set your rates to attract the people you want - has worked for us for 2 years so far.

He has lost my business. We could have had the people that were going with rent the place as they have many reviews but i don't want to deal with someone like this.

For what it's worth. We are a family of 4(two young kids) and two friends that were joining us. All I asked was if my boat would fit because it's 30' LOA and the price because that would determine the # of nights that we would stay.

Any ways. We're moving on and I just thought the community here should know what kind of business this guy runs.
