When I read about the storm, I thought first of all about hoping the storm is less than forecast and that little if any damage is done , and then I thought about the about the smell of the neighbours' Crock Pots if the Power goes out.
I decided to go back and add a little more to my post because I didn't want to in anyway downplay the severity of what this storm might bring
I grew up back east and we had a cottage on Balsam Lake. My dad born in 1906, grew up near the the Petawawa River and had some medals for saving folks from drowning on the river when he was a teenager,
Each year Dad would take us to the little church near the lake and tell us about the dangers of being on the water . In 1926 , the wind came up in a summer storm and 10 summer camp boys and one counsellor drowned on our lake. A lake where the water would have been close to 70 degrees in July and a lake where the deepest spot was maybe 40 feet deep.
A movie was recently made about that storm
Ever since Doug Paterson was a little boy going to his family’s cottage on Balsam Lake, he has been fascinated by the tragic tale of the Brotherhood of St. Andrew b…

Now back to my post
We live in a remote and very wooded part of North Vancouver. Seriously, a winding one lane road through a massive forest Our street was first paved about 10 years ago . About 5 years ago a Black Bear dragged a Bear proof garbage can all over my car doing over $8,500 dollars in damage , we have a Bobcat in the 'hood, a den of coyotes that sing nightly and whose singing is often lead by a passing ambulance running Code 3 on the Upper Levels . Oh and I can't forget this years babies , the skunk triplets who live under the neighbours shed.
Last Sunday night, my wife was kept awake for hours as an Owl called out mournfully from "just after 1 a.m. until "God knows when that stupid thing finally shut it's beak and went to sleep."
So why am I thinking of crockpots? Well we have a natural gas generator(the only one in the 'hood, and in the past when the Power goes out just after people have got their Crock Pots going , and before they go to work, our neighbours start showing up with their crock pots , for a plug in for dinner.
It is hilarious and part of living in a little neighbourhood like we do. Our House is small and modern looking with lots of windows, so when there is no power and we glow like a space ship.
My wife and I get home from work and the house smells fantastic , and then the door bell starts ringing and crock pots full of slow bubbling home cooked goodness all head home to their families and we start up the BBQ.
