Wow first prize for largest salmon was $10000 in gold. Guessing that would be a significant amount of cash these days.

Unfortunately I was catching my first fish (small pike) in Northern Ontario (family cottage) around then....a good 18 years before I moved to the coast.

I love those old Salt Chucker magazines. I remember that exact issue, I would have been 9 at that time. I scooped up any issues I could get my hands on at the Super Value in Lynn Valley. Loved reading about fishing the mouth of the Capilano, casting Crocodiles, Deadly Dicks and Metric spinners. Stories of the exotic far off 'salmon capital of the world' Campbell River. Articles by Lee Straight, Alec Merriman, others. Diagrams of how to hook up a Tom Mack behind your Abe & Al. Those were the days.
