So much conjecture and so few answers. One of the big powers, US, China -possibly India (if close to Indian airspace) will have some knowledge of the flight path but whether they will release it is another matter as it would reveal their capabilities. Somebody with knowledge had to turn off the transponder-having said that it isn't that difficult-you just have to know what you are looking at-it's not secret-you don't need flight training.
 
India has scrambled fighters for a balloon on radar...

Malaysia has asked India do to stop searching (reported a few minutes ago) The US and AUS are off West Aus looking.. I would think its in the drink
