Wow! Thanks for all the input, guys! As I try to visualize our approach to this and what we will be using, how we will be jigging, etc, I am wondering; what is the best way to work an area? Should we anchor? (will need new, much longer rode) Do we drift over a ridge, jigging as we go? Do we motor jig? Which works best? (Particularly those with boats around my size, 16'6") I am guessing it depends on depth, etc. Any ideas appreciated.
Also wondering about other opinions on bait/lures. I heard that "thumping" a jig on the bottom is important!? True???

If your reversing into the sea to slow down your drift, be very cautious that you don't submerge your motor. That would SUCK.

Thumping the bottom is more of a feelfor the bottom, just to make sure that you are where the Hali are. It's not the ringing of the dinner bell. IMO.

I do better fishing the grabby stuff over the sand flats (generally bigger fish).

Some like it rough...
Others just puke!

As to Halibut being dumb-all too true.
If you battle one for a while and the hook pulls-lower it back down quick-chances are you'll hook up the same vicious bad tempered beast you just lost-done it many 'a time.

Wow, thanks! A ton of info, very much appreciated. I have a bit of gear to get together, and we'll be off to Poett Nook. Ahh, can hardly wait. Till then hope to get some fishing in around Van Harbour. Anything being taken near Sand Heads? Live in Steveston, and that is nearest spot.
Again, thanks to all for the info and input regarding Halibut fishing. This year is the year - we are going to get one!

Hey Fishbonkers..you're welcome. I can only hope that people treat me the same way in return.

As for fishing in Vancouver...check over at the other board--Fishing in Vancouver..just about to file a report. A guy had a double of mid twenties on South of the QA...he saw both fish, lost 1 at the boat, and the other was a long line release.
