TC DOCUMENTATION

Here is a follow up to questions asked about original and laminated TC documentation , Pat (Searun) can speak to this as well......as mentioned in a previous post.....

I brought this issue up at the last provincial and federal CMAC and reminded TC that they had promised a wallet sized card for the SVOPC. I understand that this will be available sometime after next January.

In the interim, COPIES of certificates will NOT be accepted by either TC or the RCMP. They also will NOT accept the certificate if it is laminated. The only thing the guys can do is to fold it into a Ziploc bag, preferably two bags, and do their best to keep it dry. The issue has been discussed ad nauseam with no give from TC at all."

I was alarmed to hear of the reports of widespread fraudulent certificates circulating and maybe that is what is making TC and the RCMP so demanding. I reckon whoever represents you at meetings with TC needs to be raising the wallet card issue until it gets sorted out

Why does TC have to reinvent the wheel in everything it does? Put a bar code on all documents and issue credit card type certifications, Give the field enforcement officers a bar code reader that will integrate with a laptop that has the TC database on it. Scan the docs ,if they don't jive , then you have a problem.

Cheap , Cheerful , and WATERPOOOF!!!!!!!!!!!

You know what makes me laugh with all of this with this day and age of computors, blackberrys etc.
For a guide like myself or any other charter etc say they pull up to our boats and see the decal be it yellow or blue there is a number on that decal that is specific to that vessel thats why its registered (the "C" number).

HERE'S A THOUGHT </u> for them!!!!!
As im sure its already in the "database" instead of saying do you have all your documents look it up with the "C"# or the little number thats on the sticker.all they would have to do is enter that # and everything would come up or they could radio there main station. and let someone on the land base check it. this isnt rocket science!!!!

So are you MR so and so??? YES I am!!!!!! As there probally going to check if you have a fishing lic anyways DuuuuuuHHH!!!!and that definattly has your name and info on it, or they can ask for the kindergarten laminated POC card. everything else would fall into place as its all on the database

Thank MR So and So you carry on with your day....instead of worrying if you have everything on your boat my god!!!!!

Now as for crew on a commercial fishing vessel your crew has to be on the crew list stating there documents or they cant have them on a boat before departing Commercial lic. etc.

Why they make everything so difficult is beyond me????

Thats interesting because up here in Port MvNeill/Port Hardy, I was told by the RCMP and Coast Guard, that laminated copies are just fine as they do not expect us to have the original in the baot where it can get damaged. They can get my address off my DL and check on my cert later. If it is a fake they can still deal with the non-compliance.

I have two copies laminated, one for my boat and one for the work boat, plus my original is in my Safety Deposite box.

I guess different folks look at it in a different light.

Cheers

It's different depending on who you talk to.I think if you put all the tc inspecters in the same room and asked them a question you would get many diff answers. The best thing to do is deal with one guy and just do your best to keep him happy.

I can confirm that Gil is 100% correct. No laminated certificates. Rather unfortunate, as I too thought this was the best way to protect the document and make it presentable to them. I'm not going to worry about it, as I think that in the end common sense and good judgement will prevail, and if not TC has proof in every one of our files as to which course we have under our belts anyway. I agree with Trev that the best thing is to work with the local guy at TC you have, and do your best to keep them happy. Generally I find them to be very helpful and really only wanting you to demonstrate that safety is your primary concern.

We are all professionals out there and for the most part the majority of operators are great. TC is only worried about the fly by nighters and this year there will be boarding of all commercial vessels to check for compliance...the RCMP needs to justify keeping those expensive ridgid hull inflatables they got for the Olympics:D

I specifically brought this up with someone who had the authority to go directly to the powers that be (TC Pacific) to clarify what several of us had heard......it was confirmed in writing (which I posted portions of) from the head honcho so to speak at TC Pacific Region that, this is in fact the case and due to recent discoveries of several false documents floating around.....this directive is now just working its way down the ranks, and should be common knowledge to all very soon...it was put to me this way....would you laminate your passport.....birth certificate....etc etc...such items are not useful or accepted ANYWHERE....just causes big headaches....so why not just keep your originals on board, to assure any spot checks done at the dock or on the water go smoothly so
- you can get back to work in a timely manner
- avoid any embarrassment in the presence of paying clients
- avoid any fines, warnings, etc etc
- worst case lose a days wages or more for non compliance
if you have a vacuum sealer, stick them in a bag and seal them up, then stash them on the boat where you know they will not be stolen (if that concerns you), soiled etc.....if you have everything in order, when its your turn to satisfy the RCMP or TC that you and your vessel are up to date on all</u> current TC requirements, the process should just take a matter of a few minutes.....they know what they need to see, so show em and get back to hammerin' the fish....

I think you will find them all on the same page very soon following the next few weeks and the meetings the (TC) have scheduled....it may seem ok to satisfy the local TC guy at this point but it's very unlikely he is the one who will be on one of the many new Zodiacs hitting the water this summer....many have found the difference between Victoria, Kelwona, Vancouver etc TC offices quite profound on many SCV issues but with our season about to get under way I think this will not be the case for long.....just look at the long waiting lists for SVOP, ROC, Med A3 and marine first aid courses. Most have come to realize that this is the year that we have been hearing about for quite some time....

Cheers All,

The teething process on upgrading is certainly starting to show. I keep all my documents vaccum sealed and, on the day I am eventually asked to produce said documents, it will be easy to open and present said documents. I don't know why TC cannot provide the same plastic cards as the PCOC or the ROC-M as provided by CPS. These paper certificates on guide boats show serious, serious, serious lack of planning or understanding by TC.

I would call the Vancouver TC office and get it in writing just as a group of us did this week.....you will probably hear something different at the local office until they get the directive from TC Pacific.....

as in my original post you will see that a wallet sized copy is in the works and hopefully more of the same from TC

TC had 10 years to get this figured out , and this is what we get?? mass confusion and lame excuses. Guess you just have to be a laydown [:X]

If that is the case, what a PITA it will be for me and a few others, as I drive a few different boats for work. What we were told by the powers that be (Ottawa), was to laminate a copy for all of us who drive the boats and put them in a binder for easy access. That way they would be in all of our boats.

I wonder if this is because we are BC government, and there will be different rules for gov and non gov operators????

I will see what I can dig up next week.

Cheers

don't phone them....e-mail or snail mail ...GET IT IN WRITING.....WE DID....clears the whole thing up....if you find your self in different boats you may have to carry the 7 odd pieces of paper with you....pack them in with your fishing license....something you have with you all the time....floater coat....etc....just a thought....I have mine in a small binder then vacuum packed....works for me....
