Tablet computer

Hey Guys,

Thought while I am sitting here and have some time I'd share a bit of feedback for any of you interested in one of these devices.

Blackberry Playbook;
As noted above I purchased a Blackberry Playbook as it was dirt cheap through my company to get one and I have had it for about a month and a half now. My initial impression was that it was okay for browsing....I do find that the screens can be slow to draw from time to hang. You can click on "sportfishingbc" and the 'status' bar will go halfway and then it will just hang; this happens enough to make it annoying. I haven't really used it for much more than browsing/reading the news/forums etc and didn't set up any mail account or anything like that with it.

The Blackberry Bridge app is pretty good if you are a Blackberry user.....it syncs up the devices and as the Playbook isn't 3G you can almost tether off it to my understanding. You can also read all your mail, texts etc on the playbook. All in all....for $199 I paid for it, it will be fine for all I need it for which largely was for browsing and something to take with me when travelling to read news etc.

The app selection for the Playbook at this time are pretty poor.....not a lot of real benefit on there for me; game selection is poor (I don't game), and the other 'utility' type apps aren't all that **** hot for my uses.

Samsung;
A friend of mine got a Samsung tablet as an incentive for some purchase.....played with it briefly and I wouldn't really say it's all that much better than the Blackberry; in saying that though I haven't spent much time on it. I understand the app selection is better but I found the "operating system" for the Blackberry better.

Apple iPad 2 3G

Well....my Exec VP has been happy with me and sent me an iPad2 3G about 10 days ago...."yay me!". :) I can tell you hands down......it is LEAPS AND BOUNDS better than the other two mentioned above. It is slightly larger than the other two mentioned above but operating it is FAR superior than those mentioned above. Navigating around the unit is much faster, the layout is easier to use than the Blackberry, browsing/screens drawing is leaps and bounds better, and all in all it is much better thought out. I have not used it browsing on 3G as of yet but with running off wireless it is much faster than the Blackberry. The touch screen is more responsive, there are more customizable settings, the keyboard is more responsive.....all in all it is just far superior. I now know firsthand why they are destroying competitors in the tablet marketplace.

Let me just say this.....if you just want an inexpensive tablet to use for browsing purposes around the house or when travelling and you can find wi-fi....the Playbook will do just fine. If price is not a determining factor and you're willing to take the plunge.....go with the iPad as you will not regret your purchase.

I have been a hard-core PC Microsoft guy for years ..... worked on, built and administered PCs and servers at work and at home.
I really appreciate the very simple, elegant design, operating system and interface on Apple products.
"User friendly" is an understatement.
Am currently using an Ipad 3G and Iphone 4s
The new Iphone has an application called "Siri" that is absolutely amazing.
For the record I am not employed by Apple.......nor am I a shareholder :-(

I couldn't agree more with the above. A year into having an iPad, I have found that for work it is a brilliant 'tweener (somewhere between a notebook and a smartphone) that has dramatically reduced my use of both my notebook and my blackberry and reduced that amount of paper I take to/from meetings (an iPad paired/synched with cloud storage is a great combination). For pleasure, it is great for surfing, for emails and for a wide variety of other things that I never imagined given the incredible array of high quality applications that typically fall into the camp of either efficiency tools or happy time wasters. As a non-Apple computer or iPhone user, I have found it to be the most intuitive piece of technology that I have owned ... it was a snap to use on day 1.

The one place I haven't used it much yet is on the water but I did purchase Navionics last month and am impressed with what it appears to be able to do ... just haven't put it to good use yet. The one limitation is that I have a wifi vs. 3G IPad which renders it useless for me on the water ... I will likely either buy a replacement for the iPad when the iPad3 comes out or finally breakdown and trade the Blackberry for an iPad and its mobile hotspot capabilities. The wifi iPad has been a perfectly acceptable solution otherwise on land.

If you want to compare tablets and phones.. go to U-tube ! and type in the two devices you want to compare and watch the video..
The two best Tablets on the market are, new Samsung Galaxy tablet 10.1 wifi+ 3/4g and Apple Ipad2 wifi 3g, here is a great Video comparing the two side by side, you can decided for your self....

Not much on tech stuff, bought the Galaxy S2 because it has android which is part of the Google platform and I love what I understand about it!My son is a program developer and he loves android but don't ask me about it.
That said I have not met anybody who did not like Apple.

Purchased the Galaxy S2 as well.. my buddy shows up at my front door with a hard drive with 5,000 android apps on it for me! Got to like it ! Can not wait for the Samsung Galaxy S3 coming out in 2012. http://www.samsunggalaxys3news.com/ I'm sure a new Samsung Tablet will follow as well....

don't get a playbook I have one and it is painfull to use at times.

I'd like to get a GPS for my boat, and would consider using a tablet or even a cellphone with the appropriate app, or a specific GPS unit for the boat. So, what do people recommend for a newtimer? I read a lot about avionics on here, should I just get a cell phone or tablet and download that program (I think it's about $16 now), or get a specific GPS unit, and if so, which one? Oh, and I'd like to keep the costs down, so I won't go for the more expensive units out there, and don't need a unit for fishfinding, already have that. Thoughts?

Get both. Get a stand alone GPS unit with the biggest screen you can afford. look for a used one if money is tight. I would go for the phone app as a back-up. Any of the major brands are all good Garmin probably has the edge when it comes to GPS only, but they will all work. The Tablet and laptops are OK if you have a closed wheelhouse. Myself I have the HDS 10 and a older Garmin as a backup and the Navionics app on the cellphone.

What do you guys need all that crap for........ Why-- when I was a kid, all we had to communicate with was two tin cans and a string... and if you needed to know something, you asked mom or went to the library. It was sorta neat, people talked by using thier voices-- none of this voicemail crapola!!

And they call this progress--harumph............

Hey wife-- I need my prune juice!!!!!

No 3G on your IPad? Check out Bad Elf.

I picked one up and tested it in the cab of my truck while on the ferry (open deck, not covered deck). Got a good signal all the way that seemed very accurate. It put me in between the pilings of the ferry slip on my Navionics app when we hit the dock. It takes about five minutes to find a signal when not in wifi range but once it finds the satellites it stays locked on.
Can't wait to take it on the boat as a backup.
