Swiftsure Race Impacts

Can anyone provide a report of what we can expect for traffic in the waters around Victoria and out to Sooke this weekend? How will the race impact fishing areas, are certain vicinities out of limits or just too risky to be in (or simply not worth fishing) given the amount of traffic? What about at marinas, can we expect ridiculous amounts of boat traffic there too? Any details would help so we can decide where we want to head - it looks like a beauty of a weekend! Thanks!

I believe it doesn't start till 10am and with the light winds predicted they won't be in sooke till afternoon at best me thinks.

Remember, sailing boats have the right of way so that could be a real pain at the start on light winds.

going to be a major pain at Clover in the morning due to the start and be prepared for lots of traffic inshore from Race Passage to Sheringham in the afternoon. As the flood kicks in the afternoon and light winds the pro sailors will head inshore to work the back eddies to try to gain some ground. looks like a driftsure.

Sailing vessels do not always have the "right of way" if they are overtaking you whether by power or sail you are the "stand on vessel". That said a smile and a wave go a long way.

Just came back from Esq Anglers. Trucks and trailers stacked up like cord wood, rigs spilling out onto the surrounding streets. LOL Everyone's out to enjoy this stellar day. It's gonna be busy out there.

I wouldn't worry about them right now..... If you are trolling they will never catch ya

Thanks for all the tips. Went out to Pedder Bay and the parking lot was only half full around 9:30! It wasn't until after 11 that the sailboats started passing Race, and there were a few that were clearly "learning" at the back of the pack, had to change course a couple of times. No luck on the lines for us today, but it was beautiful out there, and the kids enjoyed watching the sailors and catamarans.

Fished from 6-2:30. Went to Pedder Bay also, and fished for halibut till the change. Then ran to the other side of Race and spun a prop just on the other side, spent a couple hours trying to get back to Pedder Bay against the flo. Just to made it more interesting it was just when the Swiftsure boats got to Race Rocks. First time it has ever happened to me. Anyway beautiful day out there, but no fish. Heard that Bananas had a few.
