Stupid to buy a boat right now?

There are still lots of good reasons to own a boat even in BC right now. Lots of salt and fresh water fishing access if you are on a trailer, water skiing/tubing, scuba diving, coastal exploring/camping and Island hopping to events/festivals....all good times with family or friends. Just rafting up in a quiet bay with a couple other boats for an outdoor dinner with drinks makes for an awesome evening and a sore head in the morning. Go for it!

I grew up right next to the ocean. I lived in Departure Bay 2 blocks up for most of my life. We used to windsurf and make bicycle tire carts to haul plywood boats down there etc. My parents always had boats. We started with a small 14 er with a windshield and "twin" twenty's lol. Then a 24' Reinell (one of the good ones). Lot's of Coastal exploring with that rig. Then as us kin moved out and about they upgraded to a 42' wooden cruiser. That boat was great for cruising and family events etc. So many good times on the water. I have owned three boats in my time so far. 2 of them I did not build and 1 I did build. Times change and things change and I had to sell my prized boat that I did not build. I put 10 years into that boat and the new buyer recognizes those improvements and guarantees that he will treat her with the same respect. I am going boatless for the summer and it is killing me. I am not in a good space because of my loss of a boat. I am drawn to the ocean like a moth to a flame. There is no other explanation. I and many others feel the same way. That is what drives boat sales. Not some fishing regulation.

Well our Stainless tube is bought offshore but comes to us through the States. Trump hit us with 25% tariff. We were able to absorb most of that but still had to add 10% to all customers orders. Just found out this morning that Trudeau’s retaliatory tariffs have levied another 25% on that as it comes from the USA . Now our materials are at a %50 markup over what it was 3 mos ago. Cost us one employee who was laid off this morning and we’ve had a customer cancel his order due to the fact he can’t pass on the cost to his customers. Small customer but still... now we wait and see. Could be the tip of the iceberg.
Guess a guys gotta be careful what he wishes for.

We are already looking to buy the steel we need from china, they have guaranteed us the same wear, one of our locations in Edmonton already switch and said the quality is good. We order a lot of steel from eagle foundry in the US just over the border, However, now with the tariffs were going to switch and buy it from China.
All Tariffs are is a government tax that drive up the cost of consumer goods

Steel and aluminum are still going up. Tubing has leveled off but is sky high right now. Beams and shapes will keep creeping up slowly.
Plate is the one that I am told to look out for as it is going to increase a lot
. We just stocked up and are pricing jobs higher to keep up with the price increases.
It's hard to estimate correctly with such volatility in the market

Buy the boat. Be versatile and reasonable in your expectations, and don't ever lose sight of the fact that fishing and boating are supposed to be fun! Contrary to what you might think reading some of the posts on this website, if you live in Victoria you can still enjoy fishing for salmon and other species in the area 12 months a year from a variety of access points and from what I hear its pretty darn good out there right now. I highly recommend to try and not confuse specific fishery issues with access to good fishing as that can take the all the fun out of it. There is and IMO always will be some pretty awesome fishing opportunity out there, and Vancouver Island is blessed with some of the best sport fishing on the planet. Consider Barkley Sound the past month as an example. I've already had some pretty epic sessions this year as have others - even in Victoria! Funnily enough its actually the job, not the regs that limit most of my fishing time...lol... Take the time to figure out what you really need in a boat, choose wisely after looking at lots of examples, and keep the fun in it! You'll never regret it.

Just spent an extra long weekend doing a boat adventure through the discovery islands/desolation sound area with my 4 year old son. I love fishing and my rig is totally setup for it but we only fished a tiny bit on this trip and mostly explored the coast and slept on board. I cannot say enough of how lucky we are to access such unbelievably beautiful places at our doorstep, pictures do it no justice. The only reason i'd sell my boat is to either get a bigger one... or i'm dead. Tighter Fishing regulations suck but man there are so many cool things to do in a boat on the coast in addition to fishing... i'd rather spend it on that than a fifth wheel!

I’ll wager the “trade war” will be over by the end of the year. At least here in North America. A lot of it will ride on how much the New Mexican Prez wants to play ball and the mid term elections (I very much doubt a Blue Wave is forming). Both Canada and Mexico has socialist leaders so this whole situation is just a bit of red meat to their Trump hating supporters.
Deep down, they ALL know, we won’t win this trade war with the States, so the “Save Face” option will come into play which is exactly what Trump is asking for, tariff free trade with an end to gov supported industry.
At this point, I’d look at this as a blip, when the smoke clears you will have some well off customer orders coming from down south.

Some good points I never thought of being brought up here. I myself am in the market over the next couple years but I may just wait and see how these closers play out and what they do to the boat prices in that area. I've got a couple years to wait it out. For myself it doesn't matter a whole lot where I fish, I can go north island, west island, north coast Rupert, Kitimat, I know one thing,, after 12 years fishing Sooke and dumping 8-10 grand a summer there I'm done with it now and so are the rest of my family. There's usually a group of us about 3-5 families that head that way but everyone canceled a couple weeks back with the closures. I know it's not much but there's probly 30-40 grand out of the local businesses. Like I said doesn't matter to us where we go the west side is only another 2-3 hours driving when your already going 20 hrs anyways. But I will wait this out and see if I can pick up a decent boat that's being dumped.

I’ll take that with a grain of salt. I might think it’ll end sooner rather than later and you might too. Depends on Trudeau though and he’s kinda random. This might be the time he decides to pretend he’s actually got some balls. Can’t really tell with him. And we all know trump isn’t gonna back down. The New Mexican prez is the wildcard. I’ve read a couple articles recently where their new prez is pushing Trudeau to man up and not play me nice guy with the USA anymore.
Read the Amended Recovery Strategy and look at the map for more proposed areas. Time for all of us sport fishers regardless of where we live to respond and mobilize before sightseeing is the only option.

I guess it depends on what you think the economy is going to do over the next several years. There are several scenarios that can happen but it's up to the US as they are the ones that seem to want to start a trade war with the rest of the world. Here is a link to a pdf from Scotiabank.

I fish out of Sooke and we still have about 5 kilometers of our previous 60 k plus fishing coast and Aug looks like it should be very good. No doubt about it, cancellations like yours will impact local businesses but I would not be overly optimistic that it will be as simple as you think to go elsewhere. Many other areas on the BC coast are facing new restrictions, and some have just been hit hard with restrictions and closures besides South VI. Those areas that were not hit hard will be soon enough. The liberals seem to be phasing in there politically motivated attacks on Sport fishing and coastal communities to limit opposition.
The one positive I see with your cancellations is that with the reduced fishing territory those of us who still fish Sooke well be less boat crowded, so I guess, thanks for that. So far the reports on large Chinook availability off Sooke is looking good. There is also indicators that this will be an exceptionally good Sooke Coho year and there is some hope they may give us an early 'one and one' opening as they did a few years back when the Coho returns were exceptional.
My boat is strong but older and therefor not of extremely high value and I am not in a position to tow it all over the island so I will fish Sooke until either they close it down completely, my age/health/cancer finally does me in or the support infrastructure I require, such as a marina slip, marina dry land boat and trailer storage and fuel dock availability collapses. This is the last boat I will own. I will not be substantially upgrading or buying a better boat, but will maintain it to high standards.

For the record, since I rely on the Canadian economy to feed my family, I’d like to see this BS wrapped up. Markets hate uncertainty. Trump is a bit out to lunch on this one because if you take the country’s flag that companies fly into consideration, the US has near 1.5 Trillion trade surplus, it’s just due to where they park the money (mostly offshore), it shows up as a deficit.
In any case, this is all smoke and mirrors. The drama teacher knows (or should know) that the US has got him by the balls. Just eliminate all tariffs (which is what DJT wants) and lets get on with it. The CAD value will make manufactured products quite appealing.
People need to stop trying to beat this man and start playing the game. It’s like with your wife, do you want to be right, or married?
