Strategy for the Northern and Southern Resident Killer Whales

Assistant Deputy Minister Lapointe,

The generic letter that you sent to a large amount of people is just not acceptable. The decisions made by your organization have serious affects on so many individuals, so I feel that individual questions and concerns need to be addressed. If the problem is there are too many people’s questions and concerns for you to respond to, then that means a serious problem really does exist and it needs attention now!
The areas that were closed to recreational fishing in the areas north or Otter point in Sooke and along the Pender Bluffs are a farce. To suggest it is due to the noise caused by recreational fishing has no scientific evidence and the fact that large, noisy commercial boats, ferries, freighters, tankers, military ships and any other type of water traffic is allowed in there makes no sense.
If whale watching boats are allowed to within 200m, why can’t recreational anglers be allowed to fish in the areas and have a mandatory engine and electronics cutoff distance also? Recreational anglers spend a enormous amount on taxes. For some of us it’s our hobbies and for others, careers. The DFO has been making changes that affect us all greatly with zero positive outcome.
It’s time to start listening to the fisherman that have been on the water all day everyday for the past 30+ years and get things done!

Sincerely

Also, fish farms don’t pollute the ocean anymore. Thanks DFO, you’ve saved the ocean!

because we have such strong pacific hake and herring populations. Jesus these people.

Deputy minister Lapointe,

I thank you for your very quick response!
Many, including myself will not agree with the scientific data relating to the diet of seals.
There is a shortage of herring, largely caused by commercial harvesting in the spring. The shortage of herring is also leading to insufficient food source for the Chinook salmon.
My main point is the “noise disturbance” closures caused by our low powered motors. I simply would like an explanation as to why we are not allowed in quiet foraging areas (some of which see less than a handful of whale sightings per year), while many other larger, noisier vessels are allowed?
It feels like, to us, that recreational anglers are being treated as a scapegoat to the shortage of salmon and the demise of whales, while in reality, it is the opposite of that. We care about the salmon populations and spend countless hours and money towards getting stocks healthy. Also note the demise of whales is a term I use lightly. We are currently above the 100 year average related to populations of SRKW.
Please do not oppose us. Join forces with us and we can improve the quality of the beautiful Pacific Ocean for generations to come.

Best regards,

I find it unfortunate and even racist that certain posters that post negative posts against FN harvesting consciously and explicitly uses the inflammatory language "race" when erroneously explaining the rights used by FN to harvest. It is most definitely not about "race" but instead based on s.35 of the Constitution Act and case law based on many factors such as communal harvesting history, exclusion, the honour of the Crown and other factors - but definitely not "race".

Anyone using that inflammatory language is only demonstrating their own ignorance and their own racism - since the only ones that are focused on "race" being a legal justification is solely the posters using that language.

yes - lets get this thread back on track Admin - thanks!

Aqua,
I think it's the picture that disturbs people and makes them point fingers.
The problem with that picture is that the viewer sees a bunch of dead fish
on the beach, not knowing if they have been taken by legal means.
It leaves interpretation to the viewer, be it right or wrong.

Why did YOU not Start a new thread..

I understand SC. Wouldn't want to try and defend any illegal fishing (when/where it happens) nor wasting fish. The legal basis for FN harvesting is explicit however - and has nothing to do with "race".

This thread is still drifting off track again. Remember this was a completely legal chum fishery. It isn't the fishery it is what it does that is disturbing. Derby pointed above a link I suggest we all read it. If we think more of what the issue is then it become more clear why those photos are upsetting. What upset me is we are talking about conservation to save whales but DFO cant figure out anything except to use 1800's technology for harvesting. Beach seining is just stupid to do right now, and why are we doing it? Steelhead in extinction listed in SARA. Depleted chinook stocks etc. We may not be able to change harvesting on river but we sure can change how it is done, and how to make those accountable. Have look at this video.

Great video - thanks for sharing.

Hopefully techniques like this can be incorporated here.

Here we go again, people (especially Deputy Ministers) need to carefully read the research - 10% of the diet times the number of "problem" seals in "problem" locations = a lot of smolts eaten. Not all seals are contributing to predation of smolts. Some of those seals are important prey for whales!!

Legal harvesting with explicit waste of endangered Harrison Chinook, interior steelhead and coho I have a problem with. If you don’t then you are part of the problem our fisheries will continue to face until it’s to late.
Any race that does this should be dealt with!

All I can say is its over guys can me a downer but they hammered away at area 19/20 for 11 years now I saw this coming way back when and I fought and fought for help and alot of responses were "its not in my back yard" or "why is it called SVIAC it should be named this ............. instead" best one was "it will never get to us so quit your whining".
Well now its here and I wish you all the best in fighting it , we did the DNA and guess what they ignored it Rollie and I got our results and there wasnt alot of BC fish in the mix so THEY did not base this on science its all political.
THEY will not listen to you! did you see they stated in one of the letter "NO PUBLIC MEETING" that tells you right there what there plans are ......
I personally am moving on redirecting my career made that decision to go another way as fishing is done for us after 32 years of guiding I thought I would never say these words. IF we even have a season next year ill wait and see..

I hope the best for you in the battle .
Good luck wolf
So I guess what you're sayin Roy, is it's a good time to sell a fishing boat, not buy one?

What has Inslee done? Has he stopped American Tanker Traffic? Well no, but he’s against any Canadian Tanker Traffic! What action has his government taken to protect the Orcas?

@Whitebuck gilnets aka "curtains of death"

Jay ingsle apparently wanted to undo some gillnet restrictions on the columbia....
