Starting the buildup of my stb engine

I just got the block back from the machine shop. The one deck surface had .006" run out. No wonder I was going through head gaskets. Should be good now, surfaces are like new.

Being a gear-head from way back, I do enjoy watching a good motor build up. Done a few auto build ups myself but never an outboard. Hope you post up lot’s of pic’s and everything goes well.

Ok. Ive run into a roadblock. One of my piston cooling jets is broken and the new one wont be here until tues. Ive been building up around it but cant install the crank until I get the part. However- I still tore apart my leaky hyd. steering cylinder and ordered the seal, set all my valves, replaced my faulty washdown pump, replaced a faulty bilge pump float switch, installed zincs and generally cleaned the hull. Plus checked all other functions. The cooling nozzle should be here tues., I should have it running by the weekend.

Looking good IFL! How many hours did you have on that motor before tear down (by the looks of the cowling it looks like a newer motor)? You rebuilding because of lots of hours or what? Can't be because you are bored

I was going through head gaskets so I stripped it down and machined the block deck surfaces and heads. I re-ringed two cylinders. The bores were all standard size so that was a relief. Head gaskets and two ring sets were 500$. Im glad thats all I had to replace. Machining was just under 300$.

Ah ha,,, could you tell if they were buggered from the factory, or did the heads warp on you? Either way, basically up to a new motor again for about a grand plus the time to rebuild, good deal. Time to get it wet here shortly. Cheers.

I bought the units used out of florida. I was a little leery about that engine as I could see evidence of it being apart before. Anyway, Im surmising that it was overheated at some point and whoever did the head gasket didnt check anything for straightness. It should be good now.

I just had it running. Ready for the water! Cant wait!
