Sooke Reports - Spring and Summer 2011

Well off to get some work done, changed my mind and I decided I would go give those darn fish another shot. I will be out from 8:30 till noon or so. Police were patrolling yesterday as well, not a big deal as they didn't harass anyone. Just keep the beers down and have fun!

Fished trap today from 7:00 to 10:30...boated a 25 and a 21 and released another in the high teens. All of our action was 70 and 90 on the downrigger. Knotty Buoy and Sammy I heard you guys on the radio but not sure where you were...maybe at the head? I will be out Thursday most likely if the wind cooperates.
 
Manaro,off the head we were hit 4 realesed one around 6lbs...finished with 19 and a 12 great day for a fish ,great to talk with forum members Knotty Boy & lippy,special thanx to Knotty for topping up our bait :D
 
Went out alone this morning on a scouting trip for some trips coming up starting tomorrow. Started a little before 6, lost 2 and landed a double before 7am. A 20pound wild and a 13 pound hatch. Decided to stay as it was a beauty day. Lost 2 more, released a 35 and a 23 then finished with a 8 pound pink. All before 10:30. Stayed till 1pm but nothing for the last couple hours. 53, 60 and 80 feet all out west. Heard some Renni chatter on the radio from Logan...seems like a few fish in the 30's taken today up there.
 
Why wouldn't I let a 35 pound fish go? I have a pic if it REALLY has to come to that. I've caught many fish over 35 pounds so no big deal. I'll catch a few more . I guess this is why some people have a hard time letting bigger fish go, everyone calls BS! I feel nothing anymore when I kill a 35 (when no money is on the line) but feel really good watching it swim away. I know how my day went and so do the people who watched my let them go.

Nice work Profisher, I can't wait to get out there and pull in my first tyee!

On another note, I see there is still new trolls popping up every day that we have to deal with! Tired of hearing the same old BS about netting and releasing!
 
Wow and people wonder why we don't post much anymore . Can't winno matter what you do. Good job pro fisher bet that felt good after a long weekend.
 
Don't worry fixer it was brought to the net, kept in the water, hooks pulled free, set up my camera, wet the deckr all while it was still in the water....then a quick hoist onto the deck..pics, 10 seconds later back in the water...held him there for about 5 minutes with about a 3rd of him outside the net supporting him with the hoop, he swam away on the surface, circled the boat as if to say thanks and then cya. He was tired as he fought really well and wouldn't let me bring him the last 20-30 feet for a long time.
BTW there is no other way (appropriate way) to get a fish that big over the side without risk of going over the side yourself. I was by myself so not leaning that far over to try and tail and belly support him while on my tippy toes and high centered on the gunnel.
 
Thanks Trev, ya well its been that way the past 2 or 3 derbies for me....last year a 36 and a bunch in the 20's the day before the derby and not a sniff on the weekend. Only landed a couple of teenagers this year, only saw one decent fish netted around me and that was a 28 and change. Oh well just take the good with the bad.

The only reason I brought the fish aboard in the first place was to get the pic. Business is so slow for everyone down here what with the slot size and everything else. That pic was sent out to all those in my address book along with the days story to hopefully drum up some interest for the coming days. The 23 was let go without leaving the water as I already had the pic I needed.
 
To Profisher, Bananas and the other regular posters of late: I know you know this but I'll say it anyway: Don't take what a few trolls say as being the common sentiment on here. I am so close to my summer holidays and regular fishing I can taste it--but I'm not there yet. When you guys post your reports it helps me get through some very stressful days at work, knowing that I'll be joining you soon. So, thanks and maybe when I'm out there I'll be able to thank you in person.

If your plans were to let it go...why net it then take a picture... if you call yourself a pro... then grab some pliers instead of a camera...sammy

Its all good men, lets just remember we are all on the same side here and working together to keep information going.

We all do our share of questionable mistakes on the water and not one of us should have to explain ourselves. And Fixer your welcome to your opinion, but my advice to you would be to keep it to your ******* self. I am not a patient man when it comes to calling down guilds whom have proven themselves time and time again. Im sure Profisher and Bananas wouldn't come to your job and throw rocks at you while mowing lawns!

Now lets move forward amicably and support each other some.

Nice fish Pro! I got skunked again today, it just doesn't seem to be my week! Hopefully I can get the gear figured before the weekend.

Out last night from 5:30 to 8:45. Fished the Trap with one other boat till 7:30. Nothing for either of us. Trolled to the head Mike got a 17 at the Head at ~8:00 (other boat from the Trap). Saw another fish taken 20 min. later then we got a fish (25 lb.) at ~8:45 then went in. There were 7 boats at the head while the 3 fish were taken. THe depths for Mike and us were 60 and 73.

Nice fish way to go,I also remember the fish I let go more than the ones I kill ,great pic thanks for the post and pic,it was a really nice salmon.tight lines boomer
 
catch and release is a lot of fun. i am thinking about that 74#er i carefully put back into the kenai to go spawn and make more 70# babies. the 120# pacific sail, world record size, that was billed in 20 minutes and released, all of the fly rod. the 150# tarpon...............the local guy who fought with a huge halibut, estimated at over 150#, and cut it loose, then there are all the schoolie dorado that went into the cooler :) we all make choices and hopefully have fun doing that. if you look at your hooks and don't start bleedin' go back to work with that file :)
