Fished Otter today with my neighbour who's never fished before. 10 minutes in he bags a 22lber. Hour later double header along the beach. Being the gratious host I put my rod back in the holder to net his 12lb after he got it hung up on the downrigger ball, lost mine which was over 20. Finished up with 18lb. Beauty day, great fishing and big smile on my neighbours face. The new HMX rod has been real lucky for me with 20, 15, 16, 22,12,18 & lost 2 biggies in 3 trips.

Fished Pedder Bay Sat, Sun, and today to stay out of the wind. Got 2 springs, 2 hatch coho, 6 pinks, and a nice ling cod. Mostly on green/white hootchie and green/silver betsy flasher. Some nice fish at the table.

Had a hit that ripped the hook and circle ring thing off the Gibbs Gator spoon. Has this happened to others?

Cheers,
Dave

English you have to remeber myself and a few others have been fishing sooke many many years me personally its been close to 25 years now and being out everyday helps a lot knowing where certain places fish last week posession was hot for me for 4 days then it kinda dried up for me. So went back up to otter and found them again as you can tell but. one thing i can tell you is WATCH other boats if there getting big springs out a bit or in tight, there are certain boats I watch like a hawk as they fish in places I normally dont and are (top rods)if they start hammering away I go in there with them, look for bait balls and birds feeding they are your freinds they tell you what is going on there. even if its not a place you normally fish try it you may be surprised by your results.

BTW the roll on the bait does make a diference make sure you try many spins not all the same until you find one that really works for you, we are coming up to the best tides and time to get these big fish as this month should be VERY VERY good for springs its only going to get better.

Good luck Wolf

Thanks for the tips Wolf. I know about the birds and bait ball indicators from all my reading (lots of theory - little actual practice LOL). However, I did not see any bird activity at all yesterday. What surprised me was how in tight lots of boats were at Otter and on the west side of the point. Some of those guys must have been in no more than 30-50 foot of water!! If I come in close (although I have never been in that close) I just get rockfish and baby ling cod. LOL
And yes I know some of you guys have fished for many years locally. That is why I say I will never get to jump to your fishing heights......I don't have 25 years left on the planet!! LOL

Fish the trap on the ebb and otter on the flood, trailer park on both secularity on flood and the head, whirldbay ebb and west more both to point no point give the next good flood aug 6 to 10 at otter on the flood it going to be a good with lots of springs Goodluck boomer

Don't hold your breath for any sockeye opening this year. DFO will only concede to one fishery because they don't have the balls to make it zero fisheries. There never will be true conservation and a hope of a return to consistent sockeye returns for everyone so long as one group holds power over fish managers.

I keep hearing rumblings of it opening, but I think the Dino is not going to allow it. Well meeting was today.... and??

Nothing... meeting again tomorrow

;) Real nice catch too ! I seen it with my own eyes, that we're not the only ones to get some nice Springs . :o Keep up the Good work Roy !

Why why why are some guys so dumb!!!

Yesterday morning I was fishing Otter around 830 a.m. with a few other boats. Hooked a fish in tight to the point and it didn't want to move away from the point so I played it right there. Most of the time my boat was within 30 to 50 feet of the point. Just as I started to get the fish under control near the boat a regular on this forum (who should know better) decided to tack between my boat and the point when it was clear that my fish was on the surface between my boat and the point. He might have had 15 feet of clearance between my boat on one side and 40 feet to the point on the other side but he went for it anyway. As luck would have it my fish took a run right at his downrigger cable but turned at the last second so I was able to land it. But.. why why why would someone take that tack especially when it was not crowded and sea conditions were favourable to take just about any tack?

fished Otter from 7.30 to 1.30, released three Springs appr. 15-18 lbs, fished more shallow than i usually do, two fish at 36 and one at 55, anchovies and a purple gold flasher did the damage, not to much bycatch a couple pinks and one freakin huge sockeye, water was glassy... hot.. awesome day Driller

I so amazed at the ignorance out there lately. Common sense is not that hard you would think. Even today every boat was doing a nice tack along Possession to the Bluffs when one idiot steers a corse across 6 boats point right at my side pushing me into the closure after telling him a few nice words all he has to say is "what closure?" Right rod to the rocks, set up your gear on the outside of the group then troll into the pack and if you don't know the system of the boats at a point take the time to watch the loop of traffic then work your way into it. If a boat has a fish on try and give room and if it runs in your direction, try to be courteous and bring up your gear. If everybody followed these simple rules, it would be happy for all.
