Where does one fish for salmon out of Sidney? I usually go out of Sooke but Monday and Tuesday (my only days off) don't look good for tides out Sooke way. Any suggestions out of Sidney?
I haven't fished there this year but the Powder Wharf off James Island is always popular.
Here's the June 2nd report from Island outfitters:
Sidney
Fishing was BETTER near Sidney this past weekend. We heard of two nice fish coming in: a 13.5 pounder was taken in the Channel and a beautiful 24 lb spring taken off of the Sidney Pier by Jim Dunn. Most of the fish out this way are caught on small anchovies in a teaser head, squirts in white, glow or purple haze or cop car coyote spoons.
You also could try around Coal Island, Pender bluffs, or Fairfax point, I was out there all day yesterday...but no luck in they way of salmon, seen a other few fisherman out but didn't see or hear of anyone catching salmon.
Hopefully it starts picking up
Good Luck
Years ago I used to launch my boat behind the old Sidney hotel and run my 12 foot tinner over to Sidney Spit and jig with a Perkins. Used to catch lots of springs that were in the low teens, haven't been there and done that since the 80's. Anyone do anything like that anymore?
That is awesome, thanks for the tips - i have the charts so will cheeck some of those spots out. Along the same lines, does anyone have any good spots off of Oak Bay?

I've never really tried jigging at the spit as the current is usually ripping pretty good. I guess you really have to time the tide change. What depth have you had most success at there?
It seemed like the tide was always moving when I was there, and at a pretty decent clip. I used to run to one end of the spit and drift with the tide to the other end. When reaching the end, I would fire up the motor and run back to the other end and repeat the process.
I used to drop my line right to the bottom and reel it up just a few feet. if I recall correctly, was about 90 feet deep there. There were lots of needlefish and often when you would reel in you would have a few stuck to your hook.
Keep in mind this was in the 80's so not exactly recent info. Was just wondering if anybody still uses this technique there.
I used to use the same technique off 10 Mile Point and Chatham Island with very good success.

I do Jim and one of these days soon, I'll get you out there for the day. I love jigging for salmon.
