Hi everybody :)

Our family is BRAND new to fishing. We had never been before, but went to the French Creek Kid's Dock Derby, and our son won 3 rods and 2 nets!! We had such fun and were very excited!

So what I'd like to know is, where are the best spots to fish from the beach/rocks in this area?

Also, any other tips for super newbies? Hubby fished a lot as a kid, but not shore fishing.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated :)
Linda

Now this is what its all about!! Good on you guys. I am leaving for a multi day trip up north in a couple of hours, so i dont have time to help. But I would suggest talking to the folks in the French Creek store-- they should be able to help.

Good luck.

These are a couple spots I fished as a kid in North Nanaimo...

Many salmon have been caught over the years off the rocks at the bottom of Entwhistle (sp?) road in Nanaimo (off of Hammond Bay Road). Bear in mind that the salmon fishing around here is not what it used to be, so the odds are definitely against you. You also need to be able to cast a fair distance, so might not be great for kids.

Bottom of Sebastian Road in Lantzville is a spot were you may catch a perch or rockfish. Go at a high tide.

There's bound to be a few spots around the Nanoose peninsula, maybe ask the guys in the harbour office at Schooner Cove...or perhaps Kelly could help.

Thanks so much! I had wondered if those little Lantzville beaches might be good!

Last weekend, we tried Brickyard Bay in Nanoose. We caught three little rock cod, but they were only 10 inches or so, so we put 'em back. It sure was fun though ;)

I really appreciate the welcome! I must admit I thought I might just get a laugh :)

Not sure where we're going to try today, but I'll let you know when we get home.

Well, we spent several hours at our favourite beach today, Beachcomber Marine Park. Not much luck at all. It was pretty windy, and it did rain a bit on and off. Does that affect fishing?
We caught one little rock cod once again.

So, any more ideas for us? We'll probably go out again tomorrow, so more suggestions would be great! We need a place that's deep right off the rocks, I think we were pretty much just dragging seaweed today!

Thanks again,
Linda

Rocky point in north nanaimo is a pretty good spot to cast off the rocks it is fairly consistent the end of august when the fraser run moves through, take your first left after pipers pub and make your way to the water theres a little cul de sac on the right. look for a bench, theres a trail down to the rocks, look for cars it's rare to be the only one there alot of the best fishing is close into the rocks so your kids have a good chance of nailing one even if they can't cast that far, buy like 5 mac deeps which are the lure of choice I say buy five because your going to lose some lures so may as well be prepared for that. Good luck

Mr Killer, where do we buy Mac Deep lures??

Thanks so much for the tip!!

Went to Neck Point Park today, got a sea cucumber, a TINY rock cod and one larger rock cod, still too small to keep in our opinion.

So far we've lost 5 zingers!! It's getting expensive already!
Any tips for not losing them? Or better lures to use...are Mac Deeps the best for shorecasting?

Thanks again :)
Linda

French Crk Marina has MacDeeps.
All those jigs get caught on the rocks.
You can't help it, especially fishing from shore.

Might I suggest Buzz Bombs. They are an old standby, cast well and some of the tackle stores have bargain bins full of them that are a lot cheaper then Zingers etc. Also when you first cast, count how many seconds it takes to hit the bottom and then subtract an appropriate amount of seconds so as not to hang up as often. That could be tough for the kids but it's always worked well for me. Good Luck;) eman

It's great your family fishes together! Was not sure if I would ever put in a post, but since you have been helped I thought maybe someone could tell me if there are any good shore/rocks,etc. places in Victoria I might take my young son? Thanks for any/all replies.

Mr.T.

The location section has given me some places to try. Thanks ever so much Eaglemaniac.:)

whoops... in answer to Mr. T's question about Victoria, I don't know about how good it is to take a small child but my buddy caught a salmon off the break water there. It was years ago but other people were also catching perch.

Try replacing the treble hook with a single hook.
