SFBC Braggarts Fishing Derby

I hear wind of a side bet being started with the winner taking all. Lastchance may be able to enlighten.

Now that Victoria/Sooke is the host of this hopefully annual event, I would like to know who will be the host next year? I think it would be great to pass on the torch to the next year's host reps at the wrap up dinner and award ceremony this year. So who from other parts of the province will be present and who is prepared to host the 2nd Annual SFBC Banana Challenge? I think this would be an awesome way to get to fish various different parts of the province in company with and in competition with local champs and forum members.

By the end of April I will have finished all the work at recruiting sponsors. At that time I will get Lastchance to post a list of all the prizes up for grabs in the derby on the thread in the derby section. I will list them here as well.

I had a bit of time today to talk to a few more potential sponsors and now have commitments from Capital Iron, West Marine, Industrial Plastics and Paint and Great Canadian Oil Change. The list will continue to grow!

We have seen quite a few members drop out of this fun event because of the Mother's Day date (May 11/12). The whole purpose for this event was to get as many SFBC Members from all over the places together for a big fun show and to raise some funds for good causes. If only few show then what is the point? Because most expressed concerns about the picked Mother's Day date, I want to throw out an idea here: The famous and well popular JDF Derby on Father's Day weekend is a NO GO. Who of you would participate in the SFBC Banana Challenge if it was moved to Father's Day weekend June 15/16? The organizers are prepared to go through the pain of reorganizing everything for the new date IF many more committed to join the event then.

Please gives us your feedback either here, or on the sticky thread "SFBC Banana Challenge" or send me a PM.

To clarify, the Pub Night at the Herman's Jazz Club would still go ahead on Sat May 11, it is already booked and deposits are made. I encourage you to come out for this and bring your spouses, wifes, moms or whatever along. It should be a lot of fun! Great opportunity to meet forum members in person in a fun atmosphere - not one of those depressing fishery politics meetings when we discuss more restrictions!

And I want to reemphasize that the Mother's Day date was not the organizer's idea and first choice but was rather dictated on us by others inconsiderately snatching our original date (April 20/21) after we had already made plans for this date.

Who would be in June 15/16???

I tried to switch Mother's Day with Father's Day , Father's Day to Mother's Day , no dice so if derby was moved definatly would be in .

Christopher called me this morning with the idea of moving the dates to the now vacated Fathers Day weekend because many of you were indicating that you couldn't fish on the Mother's Day weekend. Even though this will create a lot more short term work for me to reprint tickets and tweak things I' m open to this if it means the derby will be better attended. I have over $7.500 in prizes on hand now and many more commitments to come in. This will give me even more time to get further donations for prizes.
I want as much feedback from you guys/gals as possible...pro or con to moving it to June 15 and 16. I will make a decision by Friday and go from there. The newest sponsors from today are Sooke Harbour House, Silverstreak Boats, and Seascape Inn.

More prizes then entrants hey?
I'm sure if you move the date some people who are out will be in and some who are in will be out. I can't commit to either date so no help here.

Why is the JDF cancelled (again)? They could have held it last year the slot ended up lifting in time.

slot didn't lift last year until July 15...this year current 'schedule' is July 19

additional slot this year

Effective June 15 to July 19, 2013: Effective 00:01 hours June 15, 2013 until 23:59 hours July 19, 2013 in Subareas 19-1 to 19-4 and Subarea 20-5 (those waters near Victoria between Cadboro Point to Sheringham Point), the daily limit is two (2) chinook salmon per day which may be wild or hatchery marked less than 85 cm or hatchery marked greater than 85 cm in length.

It would work a lot better for me and a lot of guys I know to switch the date from Mother's Day to a later date. Fishing on Father's day easy to do, fishing on Mother's Day kinda dangerous for us family guys... My 2 bits.

Keep weighing in guys. I want to be confident either way that we are maximizing the the potential fund raising of the derby. We want to offer a side bet as well and plan on having both derby and side bet tickets available one evening at a local watering hole. Will probably also make the side bet tickets available the night before the derby for a few hours for those coming in from out of town. Side bet will be $50 per ticket all monies to the largest salmon.

Changing the dates again!!! lol just kidding.

I had been contemplating going to the derby on the current May dates but haven't been able to commit yet. I'm not saying I wouldn't go to the father's day one but there is a derby out of Silva Bay that weekend that I and a few other members had been considering. Not sure if the date change is going to make it any better as people might already have commitments either way.

Anyways, my personal opinion would be keep the existing dates but since I haven't purchased a ticket yet take that for what it's worth! Hope to be there.

Cheers

I'm in for Father's Day if Christopher let's me run the starboard side!

Me and me boat can't make the May Derby unfortunately.....

I was having trouble mustering a crew for the May date so I hadn't purchased any tickets yet. I like the idea of the switch. I'll even take pops out!

It is now confirmed as June 15th and 16th Father's Day Weekend. Will start getting reprinted tickets out today and start altering the posters.

Are you going to have a prize for a released chinook over the slot?

It may be difficult to tell who released the biggest fish but maybe everyone who releases a wild fish over the slot could be entered into a draw? Or maybe you could guestimate who caught the biggest one based on a photo and award it. Draw might be better IMO because we don't want guys handling the fish a ton trying to make it look bigger in the picture, but whatever way you choose I think a prize for a released fish over the slot is a good idea.

Here is how island outfitters is doing it for this weekends derby the banana cup could do something similar.

"Come by the store today, April19th to grab your secret item to be eligable for the catch & release photo contest for the Halibut Derby this weekend.
*You must present your derby ticket to pick up your photo item
*1 item per boat
*Item must be in the photo
*Email photo’s to info@fishingvictoria.com with the following information: Your name, phone number & derby ticket number
*Winner will be announced Sunday afternoon
"

We are looking at all kinds of ways to award prizes. We will have full details posted here well before the derby, including how to get in on the side bet.

I like the way outfitters are doing it...that said, perhaps a little tougher to photograph a hog you have to release than a big hali that glide the surface, but a couple draw raffle prizes for oversize photo would be the ticket
