Well August has come to a close today so I thought we better have a September tuna thread. Thanks OBH and others for the reports from August and thanks Slivo for the great photos. Getting pumped for the weekend if weather co-operates:D.

Who's heading out?

Here is a comment from Captain Mark Coleman from the Black and Red site......

"This is my first chance to check-in since we started on August 19th. I have been all directions but east in the last 11 trips. We have found and caught Albacore on all trips in all locations. They are present but not concentrated quite yet. We have had some really good baits stops and bigger schools of fish in the last week. Things are getting better and better and fisheries scientist are predicting a later showing of these fish. About 3-4 weeks behind. You know what that means!!!...good late season tuna action. We have also encountered some other pelagic's (see yellowtail photo below).

Yesterday we did about 30 tuna between trolling and live bait. The water was pretty rough too and we still had great action so my guess is that there are a lot of fish around. "

Cheers,
Sculpin

We are going to have a great time on Saturday, Buddy!! I can't wait.

TAKE............PICTURES!!!!!!!!! LOTS!!!!! ;) :p

Seeing as this is the "September" thread....if people have openings, keep us in the loop. I am able to try and make the trek over on fairly short notice with the exception of the weekend of the 10/11th.

Sculpin,

I took a look at that NOAA site, and is it the teal (17 degree) water that you are looking for?

Thanks,

My understanding is 14 (57.2 F) and up is what you are looking for. Also where the blue/green water meet. I'm totally new to this tuna thing and just learning myself. Lot's of reading and asking as it is a whole different ball game.

That's awesome Slivo!!! Now I'm not going to be able to sleep tonight:p:D.

Thanks, Sculp....I am just looking at it for info sake....totally foreign fishing for me.

Are you going to give it a go tomorrow?

Well, the day was an adventure for sure. Started out beating our way past Beale in the dark at 11 knots. Things got better for a while but at 50 miles we were back to 10 knots. Why let fear and common sense take over. We either had to turn back or slow to trolling speed and carry on. With water at 56 degrees I put the gear out and carried on. After 2 1/2 hours we were into 60 degree water. At about 70 mile we encountered a commercial tuna boat coming down from the Loudon Canyon. When he turned around and went back up I thought we should go that way to. Ya right! After the second wave rolled right over the roof we quartered into it for a ways and the winds came up and it was time to turn around. Winds came down and we headed back out. Winds came up we headed back in. To make a long story short, we beat the crap out of our selves and the boat and never got a bite. At one point the water was 61 1/2 degrees and lots of porpoise but no tuna for us.
All in all, the boat was ready and worked well, we were fine but pretty beat up. 170 miles today total, 75 miles off Cape Beale.
Good luck to the guys that go tomorrow.

Some boats were out yesterday. Any reports guys??

It was so beautiful out there......... flat calm and t-shirt weather. Our boat got fish. Our companion boats got 1 each. Slow fishing for sure but other than 1 fish we got were of nice size.

Landed a quad of 19, 25, 29 and 37
